Who am I? I AM ME!

Life will never be the same, there I was walking along the beach taking note of the sun streaming down upon the water and dancing upon the crest of the waves. I could feel the sand creeping between my toes and thought to myself why is it that the ocean conjures up so much emotion in me.

Have you ever caught a glimpse of yourself in a puddle, the reflection is always different than when you look in a mirror ,somehow all the imperfections disappear and what you see is the real you ,the image of how other people see you. I suppose we as human beings are so intent and critical of ourselves we fail to notice the projection that we send to the world.

Fifteen years ago , I was involved in a serious car crash and suffered multiple injuries including facial lacerations. When I look in the mirror all that stares back at me is the scarring and to me that is all that others see too. Looking in a puddle ,there are no scars and that is how others see me.

When I look down over my body I see fat and how I long for a slim firm body, but, looking in that puddle there is no fat just a slim body walking tall and straight, the body that I have always longed for is there , in that puddle, for all the world to see.

Why do we as human beings beat ourselves up, When are we going to realize that what we perceive to be is in the mind, who we are and what we look like is in the eyes of the beholder.

It took me such a long time to learn this, and now, what I try to do is project the inner me, that way,not only do I feel more confident but I know that that is what everyone else sees. They don't see the scars nor the shape of my body, just me, I like this idea a lot. No more do I wear baggy clothes or a paper bag over my head I AM ME and I cant say anymore about that.

Such wise words, a chill ran down my spine. It is hard to rise above our perception of ourselves and understand others may see us differently. And even harder to keep remembering this. Thanks for the wonderful hub!

Lovely - of course I see you as a bridge in the forest *wink*. Lately I've been saying the grander plan of not seeing as well as we age, is profound. When we look in the mirror as an older person, we not only see less wrinkles, but somehow the reflection is younger from so many memories. Personally, I love the you, you project :)

Thanks for writing this, Alison. Your perception is wonderful! I have quite a bad perception of myself and the people I love most are those who seem to not see my flaws.

Hawkesdream profile image

Hawkesdream 7 years ago from Cornwall Author

that is the way it should be Haunty, those that see the flaws , need to ask the questions and not to assume the answers.

BTW my perception of you is, a thoughtful and considerate person , and also one of intelligence. Have a hug on me!

Scars aren't damage -- they are healing; they aren't a defect -- they are the completion of successful healing.  You will say that I don't know what I am talking about if I don't have as many scars as you do.  And I reply that someone I cared for saw one of my (many) scars as an ugly blight on my skin and turned away from me.  He was wrong.  There is nothing ugly about surviving and regaining health.  Nothing at all.  I sure don't miss him.

P.S. your avatar is beautiful, though!

Teresa, i thank you, I am sure that you know what you are talking about, and I do go about daily life mostly without thinking, its just when the photograph business comes up, I cant do it thats all

Thank you so much for popping in and leaving your wonderful words.
