Well our bodies are made up of between 55% to 78% water depending on body size. To function properly, the body requires between one and seven litres of water per day to avoid dehydration; the precise amount depends on the level of activity, temperature and  humidity. Although most of us worry about dehydration, drinking too much water or hyper hydration can give similar symptom to dehydration and be just as  dangerous.

So how much water should we drink?

Well so much depends on the activities you are doing, the environment you are in and your body size. The latest dietary reference intake report by the United States National Research Council in general recommended (including food sources): 2.7 litres of water total for women and 3.7 litres for men per day. Now on average 20% of water in take is from food. Many think soft drink and beverages don't count however the majority of these predominately contain water.

What happens if I don't drink enough?

There are different levels of dehydration. If you loose approximately 2% of your bodies fluid then you could have the following symptoms

  • Thirst
  • Dry Mouth
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Dark Coloured Urine
  • Dry Skin
  • Skin Flushing
  • Feeling weak for fatigued

Also with all the other options available including coffee, tea, carbonated drinks and alcohol water is the last drink most of us consider. So what we need to do is make water more attractive and available

When we go to a restaurant there is normally a water jug on the table however how many of us do the same home. A nice jug of filtered water is not only refreshing but convenient reminder to drink more water.
