How to control stress
In today's world of fast paced industrialisation and globalisation, and most of all the recent turmoil of recession, stress and tension have become a natural part of life. Stress means different things to different people. To a motorist it can be the hassles of getting through hassles of heavy traffic, to a student it can be exams, to a homemaker it can be the daily hassles of managing the home and the family and so on. And also there is no specific age defined for becoming prone to stress. People of all ages, from all walks of life, either at work, school or even at home, can be prone to stress and its effects.
The needs, worries, situations, events, whether happy or sad, financial setbacks almost all can be factors which contribute to stress. Each one of us are prone to stress at one point or other, all its known fact without knowing how to overcome or control stress we become slowly a victim of stress and become a steady prey to this.
Stress can cause serious damage to mental and physical health, acute stress can cause the heart to beat at a faster rate, butterflies at your tummy, cold feet, sweaty hands, dry mouths and tensed muscles which if allowed to continue will become intense and will rattle your normal health.
Follow these simple tips to control stress effectively:
Plan your day: Many times an unplanned event or happening can cause unnecessary stress. In the morning before you start the day, plan out y0our day with the help of a planner so that you are well prepared to deal with your day. Schedule your day in such away that you are in total control of it.
Don't be Unrealistic: We all place unnecessary burdens on ourselves by trying to do too many things at one time. Don't be hard on your self by unnecessarily expecting to perform way above your capabilities. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Be always fair to yourself and certainly others will be fair to you.
Never allow negative feelings to build up: Always look at the positive side of everything. If you have negative feelings pent up within, there are more chances of your being a walking time bomb, try to solve your problems with others by effectively communicating your feelings.
Always make time for leisure: There are many ways to allow yourself to relax. Going to an art gallery, attending a concert, learning a new language, reading a book, listening to some good music, visiting your friends/relatives home, keeping your self in good company, etc etc will help you to get out of the tension and worries.
Just lying in the bath tub or standing under the shower allows your mind and body to relax.
Always take a break when you feel the need: Never think yourself a super human. At work or at home take a break when you feel the tension building up within or around you. Learn to relax. Take a nature walk, go camping, look smell and touch the flowers, watch sunrise, and sunset, go on a picnic, go fishing, or simply change what you are doing.
The best part of relaxing is getting yourself to the lap of mother nature.
Spread out changes in your life: If there are too many changes in your life, try to spread them out into different time periods. Don't try to make all the changes at the same time. It will always too stressful. Coordinate a schedule which allows your to undergo one change at a time. Don't try carry everything at a time.
Seek help when you feel stressed: Sometimes though we feel stressed or unable to handle the pressures of life alone, we continue to rely only on ourselves, seek help from family and friends and do not kekep everything bottled up within you. This is dangerous. Remember you will be able to handle things better if you have a strong support system.
Keep healthy: A healthy lifestyle in terms of a healthy diet and exercise is always recommended by doctors to eleiminate stress. Exercise allows you take control of your physical well being which in turn boosts your mental make up as well, it will also help in boosting your self esteem and will give you confidence.
Breathing exercise is a much recommended exercise to control stress, go to gym , practice yoga or simply do what you love most.
Learn to say "No": Often enough, our stress is due to having too many commitments which cannot be fulfilled. Take on only things which you can do and if something is beyond your ability, learn to say "no". Do only the necessary and avoid the unnecessary.
You are not alone: Remember, you are not alone when faced with stress, many people around the world are in similar situation, so always think of ways to control stress and do not wallow in self pity.
Don't try to change people or things you can't: Many spend lots of precious time trying to change people or things. They spend time worrying about doing just this. Here is a famous prayer which goes like this: God, grant me the serentity to accept the things i cannot change, the courage to change the things i can and the wisdom to know the difference.
Build a supportive and happy family: Ultimately it is the family unit which has to stick together through thick and thin. So it is most important to make sure that your family unit is strong enough to withstand pressures in alll forms.
