Have you ever been able to achieve significant weight loss?

If so, what helped the most? Changing diet? Very low cal? New exercise routine? Food journal? something else? or a combo?

Actually yes, the only time this happened was when I was living in an area where I could exercise for hours per day (mostly walking) and was very aggressive to build muscle and work out even in my apartment gym every evening. Really my diet at the time was rather bad, it was mostly pasta and bread but then again if I try that now I am doomed to failure.

Yes, I have -- and the largest factors were a complete change of lifestyle. I gained about 95 pounds when I was with my ex-husband, who loved fast food and was a video game junkie (and he weighed 400 pounds). I gave in to an extreme lack of motivation since I didn't have anyone to walk with, was told that spending time working out etc. was a waste of time, and since fast food and pre-packaged crap were what was around the house that's what I ended up eating.

Now I walk/run no less than two miles a day, three days a week, and work out twice every week. With my new YMCA membership I intend to get into a core strengthening and flexibility class to continue with my toning and conditioning. I eat all the produce I want (got to love the veggies!) and the husband I have now loves to cook -- and he used to own a catering business for some rather upscale people, so he's used to making really satisfying food that's also very healthy and virtually grease-free. Even though I just had a baby two months ago, I am now still 55 pounds below that top weight I hit with my ex, and continuing to drop.

I also have no doubt that the significant change in stress levels from then compared to now have also made a huge difference in my overall health, including weight. And I'm hosting a 500-mile challenge for women this year, so I've really been pushing myself to lead the pack big_smile. Details for that are on my profile page if anyone would like to join us.

I tried low calorie diet and it did not work well.

However, I have significant weight loss under Atkins. Lost about 30+ pounds. I had to follow the book religiously. Another unexpected benefit was lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels. Concentration was better too.

I tried South Beach diet too, however, the introduction of some form of carbohydrates got me into problems. Those carbohydrates seems to be quite addictive and it was harder to control cravings.

I tend to lose so much weight when I am depressed. I know, it's bad.. but anyway, if you want to lose weight, try fresh garlic its a natural anti-calorie/ anti-cholesterol herb

Over a 2 ½ year period I achieved a weight loss of 160 lbs. And, I’ve kept the weight off for over six months, which is something I’ve never been able to do in the past. I’ve always struggled with my weight, losing and gaining over and over throughout my life. Since I was only concentrating on getting the weight off as fast as possible, I ignored everything else that’s important in helping to reach a weight loss goal.

I started slowly, eliminating certain foods one at a time. As I did this, I felt better and better. Of course, this isn’t a surprise, but the transformation was amazing, especially after I gave up bread. Bread is my ultimate, dietary weakness, so I knew I had to give it up in order to achieve my goal. However, most of the physical ailments from which I’d always suffered began disappearing, and I wasn’t sick all the time.

Headaches, sinus infections, sore joints, colds, ear infections, rashes, yeast infections, and a multitude of other medical nightmares had plagued me for years, but that all stopped once I stopped eating bread. Then, while doing some research online, I accidently came across information on Celiac’s Disease. Eureka! I discovered what my problem had been all along; I had a food allergy to gluten. I had no idea I was allergic to anything, but it all made sense.

Because of this discovery, I’ve done further research into food allergies and experimented with my diet. Since then, I’ve also discovered that I’m lactose intolerant and hypoglycemic. So, I’ve had to eliminate many other foods from my diet, which allowed me to lose the weight I always had a problem losing and keeping off in the past. I now eat a very restricted diet, but I’ve never felt so amazing, healthy, vibrant, and clear-minded in my life. This accidental discovery has saved my life basically.

Not only have I achieved significant weight loss, but I’ll keep it off since I can no longer eat the foods that make me so ill. Currently, I follow what’s known as the Paleo Diet, which I discovered on the internet roughly a year ago. It’s exactly what I need to be doing. It’s perfect for me. And, that’s the secret to being successful; each individual has to find her own way, her own answers, her own plan to achieve weight loss.

Great answers from everyone here. It is fairly easy to attain weight loss. The hard part is keeping it off. You cannot just do a diet for 30 days then eat like you were before. It needs to become a lifestyle change. Only then will you truly have lost the weight and kept it off. Not to mention you will feel like a new person!

I still believe that keeping on exercise is a good way to lose weight. Once I read from a book. It says that if you want to lose weight, you should take some exercise which needs less stregth, but you should do it for not less than half an hour.
