Try a behavioural theapy (you can do this yourself) to change how you feel about cigarettes. This will, in turn, discontinue the dependant relationship you have with them. Sadly, self control isn't always enough for persons to cease a bad habit: they need constant inspiration for continued control over their urges. For this, try keeping your cigarettes in a tin, say, in a kitchen cupboard or something, and then try to find an image that you find particularly disturbing of the end result of smoking (this doesn't necessarily have to be the end result of prolonged smoking, either!). This could be anything from a grusome tumor, to somebody with gangerine or amputations through smoking, etc. Now take that image and stick it to the tin containing your cigarettes, making sure you will be able to see it every time you open your kitchen cupboard if you have a moment of weakness, or if you're just getting some food (wall cupboards, if you have them, work best for this technique as the image will be at eye level!). In the mean-time, keep yourself busy by doing anything you enjoy: take up a new hobby; do a form of enjoyable exercise! Absolutely anything that gets your adrenaline going, and keeps your mind from wandering to cigarettes. Also, positive affirmations are always good for this kind of thing: choose a statement that makes you feel good and empowered like 'I will no longer be a slave to cigarettes', 'I am now a non smoker', I'm no longer going to allow cigarettes to control my life, I am now free', or something similar (make up your own!), and say these statements to yourself dozens of times a day!! Try and read literature about the dangers of smoking on as regular a basis as you can, as well! I recommend you look at some 'coaching' sites such as http://www.paulmckenna.com, http://www.matthewhussey.com, http://www.fionaharrold.com, http://www.achievemorelessstress. You might find some more tips on sites such as these that are more suited to you. That just leaves me to wish you the very best of luck, and may you always be in good health from now on!
