Yes Becca; ginger root can be used as a pain killer, just chop fresh ginger "or use dried ginger" and boil it in water for 2 minutes then drink it. You can also cut fresh ginger and soak in cold water for 10 hours then boil and drink with or without sugar to get all benifits. This is good for knees and thighs pain. It works good for joints and muscles according to researchers. My own experience with ginger when I had bad cough and it worked like magic.
