I think it depends on the individual and how he/she feels about going gray.
One of my husband's best friends dyes his hair all the time, he just cannot deal with the thought of being gray. On the other hand, my husband, started gray hairs very early and is totally silver now. Does not bother him, (nor I) at all!
To answer your question, there are those who go gray gracefully, without even thinking about it and those who do not. These are the ones who dye their hair, or get it done professionally.
As for myself, a few years ago I had a few gray hairs, and I paid no attention. They were not very noticeable, except in sunlight. At that time, I changed hair dressers, went to a guy recommended by my sister. I would always get a perm every six to eight months, so I asked him to give me a perm.
He looked at my hair, and he said, "I am not perming you!" He COLORED it, and he kept it straight. I was in shock! But my friends and family love the color and style so much, I've just kept it since. He does a great professional color job that I've stayed with him.
I had no intention of coloring my hair, but it's amazing how that perspective changed with just one hair appointment!
