   Having depression can be an awful experience I know I use to thing just get out of your funk. But , truly it doesn't work tht way. Many people experience occasion sadness but depression is sadness that they can't seem to get out of. The most common symptom are as following:sadness, tearful,  flat affect, sleep all the time, changing in eating habit, not taking care of self ( poor hygiene). Depression is something I deal with everyday, Hopefully I can give some great insight. When you live with a depressed person live can be difficult. If you love that person it can even be more difficult. Through trial and tribulation with my partner. We have learn how to cope with depression. It is not easy but can be done with knowledge and understanding.

   The two main symptoms of clinical depression are sadness and anhedonia, sadness is self explanatory, but anhedonia is when you don't enjoy things you used to enjoy.
   
   Physical (endogenous) symptoms that are prominent are sleep disturbances (early morning wakening or sleeping way too much) and appetite loss.
   
   Other key symptoms are hopelessness, irritability, indecision, helplessness, fatigue, withdrawal from social interactions, poor self esteem or self worth, guilt, and difficulty concentrating.

   There are many signs and symptoms and it depends how it develops with each person what signs and symptoms you might have. The main ones I've heard of and some I experienced myself were - tiredness, waking early, insomnia, feelings of hoplessness, unmotivated, loss of interest in personal looks and care, loss of interest in things normally enjoyed, anger, withdrawing from people/environment, irritability, crying and low moods lasting more than a few days, lack of apetite, loss of weight. Or you can have weight gain when people eat for comfort. You can also feel aches and pains and be more susceptible to catching colds, flus and other viruses. These are just some signs and symptoms but there are many others. People also often describe how they think they are going crazy because of how they feel - especially if they have never been diagnosed with depression before. Many have often said that when depressed they forget things much more and that their concentration is very poor.
