It depends on the cause of depression.  If it is situational, I believe a person just has to go through it - such as with a breakup or loss of a love one.  No anti-depressant will help that kind of pain.

If the depression is chronic, it can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and anti-depressants can be really helpful in those cases

No, I think your view and surroundings are the answers to depression. What is around you and how you view it control your moods, usually. So by changing them, you will also change your mood.

I think medication can be a stepping stone to recovery from depression.  Changing your eating habits, following a healthy diet, natural supplements, exercise, fellowship with caring friends, as well as finding out and working through the issues that are causing your depression also need to be part of the treatment.

There are times medication is necessary to help regulate the brain chemistary and allow the person who suffers from the depression to level their mood.  I suffer from depression and reached a point that nothing work, my depression was quite servere and I wasn't able to do much of anything except work and sleep. I let it go on for far to long and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. When I finally called my doctor I had a pysch eval and medication was discribed and my moods, my life, my stress is alot easier to handle than it was back then.
What people need to realize is that depression is a mental disorder and when you reach the bottom and can't get yourself back up medication could be the only chance of living a stable life where before stable didn't exisit.

Medication will simply mask or remove the superficial symptoms of the depression. You need to examine the root cause of what is causing the depression at a deeper level. Please seek medical consultation and ask them to go through the different treatment options with you explaining the pros and cons - often a combination of both drugs and talking therapies are most effective. This though depends on firstly your patience as even drugs take time to kick in and secondly on your openness to examine your underlying thoughts that are triggering you to be depressed.

    Hope this helps.

not in the least. i think kicking a depressed person in the butt is the answer. my brother was diagnosed with depression and he was on medication for it. i finally got sick of seeing him taking the drugs so i took him out camping , threw away his pills (accidentally) and spent four days showing him that his depression was just him feeling sorry for himself. now he is doing great and hasn't been on anything other then pot for a few years.

No..the only way to come out of depression is to come out of the feeling that you are depressed...

i am not asking you to pretend to be happy...but atleast give a trail....medications just make u  feel more depressed
