Your body maintains a natural pH level at balance. This level is moderated via the lungs and kidneys. When not correct this may lead to an acidosis (eg. Metabolic or or Respiratory acidosis) or alkolosis (eg. Metabolic or respiratory alkolosis) state. Causes may stem from dehydration (such as vomiting or diarrhea), sickness (sepsis), or other issues. Your body does its best to prevent this by either excreting or saving ions via the kidneys, or increasing or decreasing respiratory rates. However, when this fails medical attention is needed and hospitalization may occur. This is because changes in pH can lead to significant physiological changes that are detrimental to health (Neurological or cardiovascular).
