My spouse and I live in Australia and perhaps the rules are different. Whilst hearing aids and eye wear are not covered, hearing tests and eye exams are free as part of the National Medicare System. I recently become of pension age and after some formalities receive some concessions on hearing aids and eye wear. Also there is in this country a hearing aid bank, they recycle hearing aids. This I believe to be an American idea brought to us by a well known non-for-profit Organization.
We subscribe to a good hospital insurance which covers us in case of hospitalization including surgery. Dental care and eye care benefits are available at an additional cost.
Regarding eye wear, I began to wear glasses some 30 years ago and it was costing me $500+ a year until, by coincidence, I discovered reading glasses. I now have 5 pairs of different magnification reading glasses to suit the electronic jobs I do. At less than $20 a pair, they're a good investment. You get them here from a chemist shop.
