Has anybody here had low sugar problems after weight loss?

I'm going to guess that I've lost around fifty pounds since late spring. Recently, I've been having a lot of sugar crashes, and I think it may be due to my body not getting the memo that I don't need all that extra insulin. I was just wondering if any Hubbers have had this kind of problem?

i know someone that this happened to. after an extensive medical workup to make sure she didn't have a tumor that was producing insulin, she kept having severe low blood sugar recations and passing out. she finally gave up and regained her weight. i'm not recommending that course. i hope things balance out for you in time. avoiding simple carbs and eating complex carbs with protein as between-meal snacks may help.

I'm going to buy some glucose tablets when I'm out this week. Gaining the weight back is not an option. I do try to eat often, but you know how it is when you get busy... Thanks for the answer!

Are you exercising a lot? I do a lot of physical work outside, and I find that sometimes, no matter what I have for breakfast, I am having a serious sugar fit by 10am. Suddenly I have to eat a whole peach, peanut butter, drink juice, etc. I went to my doctor about it and he simply said that it can be very normal during activity for this to happen. His advice was to go ahead and eat the peanut butter crackers or the whole can of corn. Congrats on your weight loss, by the way! smile

It does happen when I'm doing more strenuous things but not always. I may too old for mountain climbing! It happens at weird times and I've noticed I get hungry more often.  And thank you. smile

I have Type Ii diabetes and am on metformin and glimiperide.  Protein is my key to avoiding low sugars.  If I start my day with anything less than high protein/low carb, I am guaranteed to bottom out a couple hours later with a sugar of 50 or less, the shakes, sweats, and blurred vision.

My question to you would be, is your weight loss intentional or are you just losing weight?  My diabetes was diagnosed when I lost 50 pounds in 6 months without trying.  My body was breaking down muscle to get fuel.  It wasn't weight loss, it was muscle loss.

If you are trying to lose weight and your sugars are dropping, I would talk to your doctor.  Perhaps you need a change in your medication.  Our bodies do get use to the meds and sometimes just a different brand can make a difference.  Low sugars are scary.  Talk to your doctor.

Mine is intentional. I topped out at almost 400 pounds in 2006, last year I just got plain sick of being fat now I'm down to 250. I am trying to avoid medication if I can help it, but I will talk to someone. Thank you for the advice!

Depends on the reason for your weight loss - if you weren't trying and it keeps falling off, you're thirsty all the time etc - see your doctor - it could be Diabetes.

If, like me, you have a reason for the weight loss - eg Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery (oh...thanks, you just gave me an idea for a hub!) - then your sugar absoprtion is affected, and there are various reasons for the sudden drops - such as too much carbs (about an hr previous to drop), too much sugar (immediately before drop...I'll explain in the hub), or too much fat....

Congrats on the weight loss though!

I'm definitely working at losing weight. It's coming off quickly now, but I go through periods when it doesn't. Diabetes does run in my family, but I've always tested in the normal range, even when I was 400 pounds. Thanks for the advice! smile
