Do YOU think that compound exercises make you bulky?

I recently heard a personal fitness trainer make the comment- "compound exercises make you bulky". Before I write a hub on this topic, I wanted to see what people thought about this perspective on compound exercises. Please comment below.

compound exercises are extremely effective and basically work like any other exercise except they have one big advantage: they help to move blood around the body faster as you're using different muscle regions. Blood carries a lot of protein + amino acids to the muscles, the faster it moves the more of these the muscles get. This works best when you train an upper-body muscle followed by a lower-body muscle, vica versa. Also gives different muscles a chance to rest in between different exercises, allowing you to train for longer and recover faster.

I agree Ingar Filinn, compound exercises are best for momentarily improving circulation and all that goes along with that, but what about becoming bulky?

If the muscle tissue gets more nutrients and less build up of lactic acid(caused by poor circulation) it allows them to repair faster and get bigger- giving you pure muscular bulk and not just a layer of fat over muscle

Your diet and exercise/workout program plays a significant role in appearing bulky. Using improper training techniques and not monitoring your caloric intake, you can increase the amount of muscle underneath your fat tissue giving you an appearance of being bulky.

I agree, Alphadogg. Diet and exercise are key.

Compound exercise really makes muscle mass. For instance, squat or deadlift alone can stimulate more that 300 muscle. For short time you get most stimulation and max amount of HGH and testosterone. For hardgainer and ectomorhic person gains better. Endomorphs with cardio will get benefit if done with high intensity.

I don't can't get what dos it mean bulk, is it muscle mass or fat. Whatever may be, I and my students all got best result from compound exercises. You may read late Mike Mentzer for the effect of compound exercises.
A good read - http://www.squidoo.com/whole-body-worko … s-the-best . ( I am not promoting this link, it is a really good read with some unusual information.

rodney80- bulk means thick, undefined and even chunky. I agree with your comment on squats and deadlifts- these are two primary movements that shouldn't be ignored.

This is a very common question, and very common misconception as to the effects of weight training, strength training, and in particular performing heavy compound exercises.

Compound lifts generally will build more overall mass bc multiple joints moving thru multiple planes stimulating tendons ligaments, and muscle. Isolation type lifts will build that specific range of motion and the muscles ligaments and tendons associated with that , but little carryover in other areas. For example, a seated calf raise will train the calf muscles to a degree, vs a heavy barbell front squat hold calf raise . Not only are the calves being stimulated but the whole body is working to stand up with balance throughout the range of motion leading to a greater muscle growth stimulus. Results will vary largely from the fuel used for growth, quality of nutrition, macro nutrient breakdown, hydration and proper rest. Isolation lifts are useful for correcting natural imbalances .
