My Dad was in decline for the last two years of his life, and to give my step-mom a break I would go and take care of him on Sundays so she could go to church and to the grocery store or whatever errands she needed to do. Now you know we all want to be mobile right up to the end, but in his case he was just too weak to walk any more and was bed-ridden the last year. He hated having to wear a diaper and be changed like a baby, and when I was with him he would convince me to get him up and to the bathroom. I just felt such sympathy for his predicament that even though he weighed as much as I do, I would struggle and pull (and he would try to help as much as he could) and together we would accomplish the deed. I never told his wife because I know she wouldn't have wanted him out of the bed...but it was one little thing I could do for him that made him happier...to go to the bathroom IN the bathroom! Funny what's important at the end.
