The diabetics should take foods according the food pyramid which is prescribed for all. But they should take plenty of green vegetables and fruits which should have low glycemic index. Edible oils should be restricted to MUFA (monounsaturated fats) and PUFA (polyunsaturated fats) only. Lean meat and fish may be consumed once or twice a week depending upon food preferences. Fast foods should be totally avoided since they are loaded with trans fats.
Sweets may be taken in very small amounts but a diabetic should be careful not to exceed total daily calorie requirments.

Salt consumption should also be restricted since diabetics are prone to develop high blood pressure.
