Do the dark days of winter bring you down?

Some days are dark and rainy, now that it is winter. Do you feel sad some days looking out at that? I need to cheer myself up some days! I wondered if other people get that feeling too.

You know I have always loved days like that because I know I will be home and can get much needed things done. I, too, think it is such a good time for hot soap or hot chocolate or baking cake or cookies. Now if I lived where there was much rainy, dreary weather I might be affected but just now and then gives me a turn at comfort things, which I enjoy.
I have to admit that if the roads get bad so I absolutely can't get out it makes me a little apprehensive even if I don't want to get out, just knowing I have no choice I guess.

I can understand that you would feel kind of trapped, Jackie. Hot chocolate is a great way to pamper ourselves on a dark day. Good tip!

Christy, this is an excellent question. Whether it's hereditary, environmental, or a combination of the two, my side of the family as well as my adult children have a tendency to be more down during the winter months. For the past month, however, I've been walking a lot, and that has helped tremendously.

Thanks for sharing about your own family here, my friend. I am going for a walks a few times a week but going to make an effort to ramp that up. Even the little Vitamin D we get is likely helpful!

Not really. I enjoy the winter months. Even though it's cold outside, inside keeps me warm and fuzzy smile Though if it was really cold, I probably would be depressed during the winter.

I think of the dark days of Winter as another form of beauty that the world can offer. Just like the phasing of one season to the next, there is always some sort of inspiration to be found; even if I despise the cold. Haha, I'm often found inside bundled up watching many feet of snow fall to the ground. But even then, it is something beautiful to behold and another way the Earth soothes its aching pains.
In this time of dark days, many of the things on this Earth fall into hibernation or die but it only leads to rebirth when spring comes around.
This rhythmic change represents the very cycles of life that claim us all at one time or another. It can be change within us, outside us, or in death when we merge to a new physical life.
The dark days of Winter are only a fraction of the beauty of life and everything it has to offer.

I think I will look at the dark days in the way you explain, as a part of the changing of the seasons and creation of new nature and other life forms. Thank-you for explaining the concept so well here!

I feel exactly the same way.  I've been trying to work on this problem for years, and this is the first year that I've started taking two D-3 vitamins daily, and it seems to lift me up a little.  Vitamin D is the same vitamin that is in milk, and it is released into your body naturally by sunlight, but since there isn't much sun in the winter (i also work an office job) I have to supplement the use of vitamins to help me maintain and get out of the winter times blues.  So far, so good.  It's not as good as sunlight, but it's definitely better than nothing!  Hope that helps!

Thank-you Frank. I am taking Vitamin D and another person suggested more walks. I hope that combo keeps the winter blahs away. Take care and stay healthy!

I was just talking to someone up north who suffers from depression when the cloudy days of winter linger.  I remember those days as well.  Right about this time, mid-February, people up north begin to have cabin fever and knowing how to get through the few weeks left till spring is really important.  I used to walk the mall and get out among others to help fight the blues.

I live in Canada, so there's not much rain, just some dark days. However, my eyes are really, really light sensitive. The way the light reflects and refracts off of fresh fallen snow can be blinding - some days I can't even drive because of the glare. So for me, the dark days of winter are actually a welcome relief.
