I say yes, it is a conflict of interest. Even here in South Africa the major chain supermarkets also established pharmacies inside the supermarkets, where they also sell cigarettes. But, here we went one step further; the same chains have also embarked to established the same brand liquor stores right next to the supermarkets. So, you get your basic food stuffs as well as health foods, go and get your prescription meds, buy your cigarettes and on your way out buy your liquor. For me liquor is actually worse than cigarettes. You destroy not only your own health and well-being but with drunken driving you kill and maim innocent people, orphan little children or leave people invalids; and how many battered wives are there due to alcohol misuse? Drunken driving is the number one cause of fatal motor car accidents in South Africa. Let one think!

Well, I would say, it is up to the consumer to make the decision. I cannot imagine that anybody would ever say "Since they sell it at Walgreens, I thought it was ok to smoke".

I personally do not want to shop to decide for me, I want to have choices and use them in my own consideration.

What else would you want to ban? You start with cigarettes, but then you can go through the shelves and skip half of the inventory because it isn't healthy or safe. What about snacks containing aritifical sweeteners (and it's really hard to come by some without), soft drinks containing artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup? Not so sure that cigarettes are really that much worse...

Do you know how much money it cost to buy a pack of cigarettes? A flipping fortune! They do it because of how many sell, to pull in customers who don't want to buy a pack at the gas station, and the money it brings in. Everyone is a hypocrite. The only question is: what part of their life are they a hypocrite in?

America spends as much on medicinal drugs as they do on gasoline. We are by far the most medicated country on the planet and a LOT of people die every year from medicine reactions and mistakes. So, you could argue that pharmacies aren't really about health at all. They are about making money. Hence, cigarettes fit right in. Plus it helps generate future customers. It's like tossing a few nails in the driveway of your tire shop.

Pharmacies can be about health. But as advanced as modern health may be, it still depends largely on the human factor for successful use. That means that it's up to people to lead a healthy life and it's up to doctor's to do their job

Pharmacies sell prescription medications prescribed by doctors. The doctor determines if the medication is right for the patient. The OTC medications are sold everywhere and that is an individual choice.

First of all, cigarettes don't cause cancer, they increase your risk by putting stress on your lungs. Did you know nail polish does the same thing? And hair spray? Even body sprays and perfume? All which are more likely to lead to cancer then smoking! Parabens in lotions and make-ups can lead to cancer. Bi-products and fake sugar do as well. And yes, even prescription drugs can lead to cancer. Do some research. There is poison all around you. Cigarettes are the least of our worries.

Actually, some of the chemicals in smoke from cigarettes have been proved to directly cause the cellular mutations that develop into cancerous masses. So please do some research of your own.

Unfortunately, pharmacies tend to be shadowy businesses. As a retail pharmacist in Portugal I can tell you that many of the OTC products in shelf are nothing more than placebos. I think that the current pharmacy business model, which is product-driven, is the culprit. Unless the pharmacist works as a truly independent healthcare professional, who works directly with the community to promote health and advice on the correct use of medicines, things aren't going to change.

It's a total and complete conflict of interest however, making money over rules this. It's best for customers to consider their own health or choose somewhere else to patronize if boycotting is important to them.

Because of insurance, I go to Walmart. If there is an emergency room visit at night, there is a Walgreen's that has its prescription depart. open 24 hours.. Some days that department will not turn a profit. Total sales maintains this service.

Walgreen Pharmacies place all their Nicorette 'Smoke Buster' Products right next to Cartoons of Cigarettes, so...they're completly covered...they will sell the cure or keep on feeding the habit! Talk about raising the bar on conflict of interest!

Why stop at cigarettes? Most pharmacies sell liquor, which can become habit forming or react with medication the person may be taking. Cigarettes and alcohol are legal. It is up to the individual to make a choice. Grocery stores sell over the counter medicines and cigarettes, is that any better. Walmart and Target sell all sorts of things from prescription drugs, to liquor, to numerous poisons, such as paint thinner, motor oil, etc. People complain about government running their lives. If pharmacies were prohibited from selling cigarettes and liquor, the people are going to complain.  I do not smoke. I do have a glass of wine a couple of times each week. Some people think beef is bad for you, should grocery stores stop selling it. Is it a conflict to sell toothpaste on one aisle and candy on the other? Freedom of choice is the ruling factor. Choices are sometimes limited by government intervention, That is another issue.
