This is what my wife does to me when I fall asleep first. We both snore, but I am the kinder gentler soul. We've both always snored. I'm worse when I'm extremely tired.

I used a set of headphones and a thunderstorm cd for a while, but I ended up with ear infections. I'm thinking this may be the reason my grandparents had separate bedrooms. :)
I would go for the big fan. White noise may help. We had a ceiling fan in our last home that had a rhythmic thump. It helped me fall asleep, but drove the wife nuts. She'd go sleep on the couch when it was hot. I wonder if they'd sell me that fan?
It's best to get a plug-into-the-wall fan that you can move from room to room, change directions, etc. It helps soothe you to sleep and the cold helps keep you asleep.
