Black cohash is a plant that grows well in the shade. I have a variety growing in my shade garden. The garden name is cimicifuga racemosa and often referred to commonly as bugbane because it deters bugs. My perennial is not the green leaved variety or even the "brunette" variety but rather is the distinctive "black beauty" with the deep maroon leaves to add color and texture to the hosta garden.
I also keep Sring Valley Black Cohosh Menopause Complex in my refrigerator. This formula provides two formulas - one for daytime and one for nighttime. Both have 20 mg of Black Cohash Extract but the daytime has Green tea extract and ginseng extract and the nighttime has valerian extract (which I have read is a favorite of the butterfly) which helps with anxiety and sleep disorders.
I don't take it often but when I do I must say it is very effective.
There is concern with taking any hormonal herbs and medicines. I wish research would tell us more about the true origins of breast cancer to make the decision process clearer.
I like the split formula but I must say the smell is offensive and thus I keep in the refrigerator.
The white flowers I find graceful albeit the stalks a little spindly.
Like all items health related, do consult a physician who knows your history and the medical history of your family. One of the items Mayo Clinic does exceptionally well is a holistic review of the family medical tendencies.
