I think because life is harrowing, harsh, and daunting. Life is isn't easy, there is a lot of turmoil, sadness, loss of hope, crime, etc. As well, we're constantly dealing with adversity, decisions and things beyond our control.

That being said, there are also a lot of amazing things about life. Our families, the weather and nature, our job, living in a free country (for those of us lucky enough),  kindness from a stranger, laughter of a child, etc.

Although a lot of bad things are going on in the world, there is also a lot of good things, and kind acts being performed, we just have to look for it.

I think sometimes people get so bogged down with the bad, that they forget about the good things in life. Which just drags them down more, making everything seem more challenging than it actually is.

LOL!  I have to start out with a chuckle today because it hasn't been the best week.  A company just let go of 8500 employees close to home and my children's father is one of them.

Combine that with the illnesses and surgery I've had the past two years, as well as the medical problems/diagnosis that my son has encountered during the same time, sometimes I just look at life and say why???

I feel like I'm holding on by the end of my fingers to the last remaining crumbling pieces of tar at the sides of a gaping whole that seems to get bigger every day, and the only way left to look is UP!

So, despite having gone and keep going through harrowing, harsh and daunting times, I try to stay focused and positive.  It can always be worse.

I think some people that have a lot of hard obstacles in life find themselves dwelling on the negative instead of the positive.  It brings down their whole demeanor and makes them feel hopeless. They lose the ability to look up and only see the endless pit beneath their feet.

If your life is going smoothly, it's easy to think that a happy face and a positive attitude will fix everything, but the truth is that life is indeed harsh and daunting for many people. Sickness, poverty, natural disasters, crime and a host of other things can be overwhelming obstacles that are not easily overcome. There are some things I couldn't possibly fully understand because I've never had to deal with them.

People expect too much from themselves and others. Any deviation from a plan is catastrophic. And they try to control things that they have no control over rather than to accept things at face value. Many don't live life; they force life. And when life resists, we use words like daunting and harrowing. It's not life's fault. It's ours and the way we choose to handle it. Most people that believe life is that difficult is because they are trying to live life all at once. These people don't understand the meaning of " living in the now" or " one day at a time". If we focus on what MAY happen tomorrow and make up our minds that it will be a stressful day, it probably will be. What is sad is that we spend so much time with tomorrow that we often let a great day, today, slide right by us unnoticed. We can lose weeks and months like that and life becomes a big blur.
My days are like roller coasters. They have their ups and downs. But if I live in the now, The ups outnumber the downs almost every time.

It might be because many people have a history of harrowing, harsh, and daunting experiences. Our experiences, especially early ones shape our thinking. Our current circumstances can also be a factor.
I had the experience of growing up in a close happy family and have had many blessings and a lot of  good luck.
I get your point--  a lot of our outlook depends on our state of mind and attitude, but there are reasons for some people having a hard time being optimistic.

What causes "some people" to view life as a quite harrowing, harsh, and daunting endeavor? The question is a little confusing. Some people may have causes that differ from some other people though they all may view life in that way. I guess my point is there are many different causes for some people and different causes for some other people, but if you had to boil it down to just one cause for people to feel that way it may be that people who view life as a quite harrowing, harsh, and a daunting endeavor lack faith in a creator, an all knowing omnipresent being who created us loves us and has prepared for us an eternal place with him in paradise. Our life here on earth is like a fleeting moment when compared to eternity and the knowledge that nothing can remove your name from his book of life, no one can pluck you from his hand profoundly changes the way one views his/her life here on earth. Without that knowledge, to be deprived of the hope for an escape from the pain of this sinful fallen world we live in life most assuredly has to be a harrowing, harsh, and daunting endeavor.
In the end you might say life is what you make of it - if you think it to be daunting it will be daunting for you. If you think it to be harrowing it will be harrowing for you...if you're like Nick Vujicic nothing can keep you down. http://www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/
