What do you predict regarding advancements in medicine and related health technologies within the
next 80-100 years, particularly in terms of genetic engineering?
Unfortunately it's almost true what I heard comedian Chris Rock once say about pharmaceutical companies today; "There is no profit in coming up with a cure!" The real money to be made is for coming up with medications that will extend one's life and allow them to (live with) the illness. TV commercials bombard us with medications to take for every itch and twitch known to man. "There's a pill for that."
Having said that I believe there are some very rich mavericks out in the world who do want to make a name for themselves as being "the person" who found the cure for AIDS, Parkinson's disease, Cancer, or Alzheimer's Disease. It seems like it's been forever since we saw an actual "cure" for something as big as polio was in it's day.
It was a shock to most people when Dr. Richard Sacra was cured of Ebola. It makes you wonder what else the government is sitting on.
There are going to be designer genes within the next 25 years or so, and it's going to change us a whole lot, but nowhere near as much as the tech revolution that's right behind it. Computers within our bodies will be able to obliterate harmful bacteria and cancer cells, etc from within our very bloodstream, and internal organs (which are already starting to be 3D printed) will be commonplace for the every day user by 2045 or so.
In the shorter term, self doctoring (apps on smartphones are the beginning) will be where the next revolution lies. It will take decades for the bureaucracy of hospitals to jump on board, but individuals will reap the benefits of accelerating technology right away.
