What are some good tips to help alleviate really painful menstrual cramps?
If you are experiencing symptoms of menstrual cramps, it's important to see your doctor to be properly diagnosed. There are two types of painful menstrual cramps or spasmodic dysmenorrhea / menstrual cramps: primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea.
Good helpful tips may be divided into pharmaceutical remedies and natural remedies.
1. Pharmaceutical remedies: OTC ibuprofen 400 mg tab or diclofenac 50 mg tablet or hyoscine-n-butylbromide 20 mg tab (1 tab 8 hourly, according to cramps & pain; no cramps or pain – no need of tablet).
OR, Dicycloverine 10 mg tab (prescription product) is highly effective for the treatment of painful menstrual cramps
2. Natural remedies is less effective: Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and anchovies. They are also available in fish oil capsules, which may be the preferable form because many brands filter out any pollutants in fish, such as mercury and PCBs. It has been found that fish oil intake seemed to have a positive effect on menstrual cramps. Low-fat diet. Exercise. Aromatherapy. Massage. Acupressure.

I suffer from very painful menstual cramps and a very heavy heavy period. Aside from taking midol to relieve the cramps, backache, and pain; I usually have to go soak in a hot bath for about an hour every night because the cramps cause back pain. I can't sleep throughout the night if I don't.
