I take diphenhydramine (Bennadryl) OTC. I'm too young to get prescribed anything like ambien. I tried to get a script filled for Lunesta, and it would have cost me $140 with insurance. So. Screw that. I'll just take more diphenhyrdramine.

Also, try to meditate before you sleep. It's easy to let pain or thoughts keep you up. Cure your restless mind with music, incense, and maybe watching Fractals on youtube.

    Hope this helps

    Btw, it's 3:25am smile

darken your room sufficiently, no TV or blaring  music,  put on some soothing music, have a mattress and pillows that are comfortable, make sure your bedroom is pleasantly colored. Colors like red keep you up and peppy, an aroma candle with lavender perfume helps relax or just spray a couple of drops on you pillows and sheets

The set-up of your room is very important!

This may not be possible but by removing any objects/technology that remind you of work or entertainment from your room you making it a purely sleeping zone. Get rid of the tv, computer, radio and any other stuff that could make it a place not for relaxing. ONly go to your room when you are going to bed, don't go there an hour before you want to fall asleep.

Also, lavender on your pillow can help make you sleepy. I'd stay away from drugs unless it's is really bad as most of the time it will be a psychological reason why you can't sleep. Meditating is good too!

    Hope that helps

Go to sleep at 11pm and wake up at about 7am - that should be optimal hours for every human. If you can get this sorted you have done a great deal already. And try to shut down your mind before you go to sleep, also don't stay on computer to long and at least not half hour before sleep.

Do you suffer allergies, some forms of insomnia can be allergy related - dust mite allergy, for example, can cause us to wake at night. Another reason could be a deficiency in something; a supplement may help (I take magnesium and it helps with sleeping). And, of course, there is stress. Is there anything in your life persistently causing physical, mental, emotional stress; if there is, you may have to seek a resolution.

When you're facing this trouble, a lot of it is lifestyle change.

Try and make a point to exercise regularly so you will be physically tired at night.

Leave your self an hour or two before you go to sleep at night to relax and read or do other activities you find soothing. Turn off the tv, the computer, and just let your body tune down.

When you're still having a lot of trouble, I find a warm bath as a great way to help me calm down and get my body to sleep.

Also, get yourself on a schedule. You might be tired the first few days after not sleeping well, but avoid naps and make it to the night.

Finally, don't stress it. The more worried you get about sleeping, the harder it will be.

epirus is right on as is the room setup. i found that less computer use about 1 to 2 hour before bed gives me a better nights sleep.

Rather than going into detail on it here, I've linked my hub on all of the different measures I've tried to sleep "like a normal person"...and my theory on why they never work for long.

I stopped drinking anything with caffeine after 3:00pm and it has truly helped.
