Self imposed identity spawned by societal influences and social environment. As we become more technological as a civilization and less moral and established in integrity individuals have a greater feeling of loss and hopelessness. In a jaunt for identity and purpose and the feeling of "part of the normal society" many acquire tattoos and multiple piercings even to the point of being grotesque.
I definitely don't advocate it but after many years of counseling youth and adults I do understand the reasons for it. All I can say is because one was so weak as to not be able to endure and hold their head high in the face of adversity when times were tough they now have a mark on them that they will eventually despise in years to come. At that point the mark will no longer be a friendly companion but a curse from which escape is not possible.
I know these things first hand. In my youth I have acquired tattoos.
