This symptom that happens around the beginning of menopause is called 'hot flushes' or 'flashes' - the sudden change in temperature, facial or neck reddening, the feeling of temperature change are all due to sudden but self remitting changes in the blood vessels under the skin ( like flushing when embarrassed or angry). This is due to change in hormones -
Non medical treatment includes regular exercise, cooling clothes, drinking plenty of water, massage, leisurely baths, Vit B supplements, weight loss, yoga and reducing coffee and alcohol.
Medical (drug) treatments range from Hormone replacement therapies, SSRI type drugs ( citalopram) and a drug called clonidine- these are only preferred if the symptoms are real bad as most flushes settle after a few months and rarely continue for years.
Hope this helps.
