There is one single important fact that you must first acknowledge on your journey to discovering your happiness. That fact is you are only as happy as you allow yourself to be. You could simply want to be happy but the fact is if you are not happy it is because you are not allowing yourself to be. There are so many benefits to being happy as opposed to being sad or angry all the time.
We all know that being happy and optimistic about the future is an amazing thing, but did you know that it is beneficial to your overall health? Having a positive mindset can protect you from daily stresses that would otherwise cause medical problems. Stress is a leading factor in heart disease and strokes.
There was a saying one time that said, “The only constant in life is change.” Things are always changing and will always continue to change. So long as we have the ability to stay happy and positive those changes will be met with optimism. Another aspect of change is that we have the power to make changes whenever we need to. Having this knowledge can help you get through any of life’s challenges and trials because you now know that it will change—by itself or through your perseverance.
What Makes People Happy
One of the greatest gifts we have is other people. Other people make a happy life possible. Through relationships and friendships we learn to share our differences and we also learn how to accept differences. Because other people are a source of happiness, they are also a source for displeasure. This can stem from them expressing a difference of opinion on a matter that you feel you are right in. The happy and positive person will know that this is nothing to take too seriously though. You can also learn to be like a duck—let things roll off your back that you cannot control.
Sources of Happiness
Like I stated earlier, people are the number one source of happiness. Every single person in the world has the ability to be happy as it is ever present. Another source of happiness is an activity you enjoy doing. I like to write, it is a source of happiness for me as it allows me a chance to escape from the everyday grind of life. I can go somewhere else. Though it is a source of happiness it can also become a source of discomfort as well. If you put too much pressure on yourself to produce or perform your hobby, you can become discouraged and have feelings of self-loathing. Take your time and do your hobby when you feel ready to. Do not force it too often as this will cause you to lose interest in it.
Another source of happiness is material things. Material things provide a type of happiness that is fleeting, which means it doesn’t last long. The joy they provide though is a great way of increasing your happiness. Perhaps you treat the material things as a type of reward for an accomplishment. All these provide you with a sense and feeling of happiness.
The trick behind all these sources of happiness is to increase the pleasure you receive from them. Doing this will cause life to be a better experience and will also help make you healthier. Laughter and joy is always the best medicine.
If you are not happy then all you have to do is choose to be happy. Making this choice can be difficult but it is all that is required. The sources mentioned above will not make you happy unless you choose to allow yourself to be happy. You get to control that aspect of your life.
Ways to happiness
Have a positive attitude. Think about things in the glass is half full mindset. Remember that being positive will make positive things happen for you. If you have a lot of work to do, break it down and work one thing off at a time. Never try to accomplish a large task at one time, instead break that large task down into smaller tasks and accomplish those to achieve the end result.
Be Thankful. If you survey your life right now, you will realize that you have a lot to be thankful for. Thank people for doing things they normally do without gratitude. This action will make them happy which is like the butterfly effect; they will return the kindness upon you. When you are in a marriage, you should thank your spouse for doing the chores they normally do. This will show them that you appreciate their actions and that they are important to you.
The News. The news is the worst thing you can allow into your life. There are ways to control it though. If you turn on your TV in the morning as a part of your ritual then you are allowing a huge amount of negativity into your life. News is the most stressful thing there is. How many news stories can you watch on the TV that is good? About 1 percent of the news is good. I don’t watch news, I read it. I can control what I learn about through the internet and news story headlines. Needless to say I don’t read much news. Also, if you’re in a family that has to call you every five minutes to cry to you about the latest crisis in their lives, this will do nothing but stress you out and cause depression. Tell your family to stop burdening you with their problems, especially if they know that you can do nothing to help those problems.
Religion. If you choose to acknowledge the church, or God, then join a religious service. Share your joy with people that also have the same joy. Religion or the lack of religion (depending on your views) can create more happiness for you. If you are religious do not attempt to convert an atheist, this will only cause stress and aggravation. The same applies to the reverse.
Management of Time. Time management is a valuable skill. When you are productive and accomplish your list of things to do you become satisfied with yourself, you earn self-esteem. If you have no idea how to manage your time, here are some simple tips. Think about the things you need to get done, write these things down in a list, and once your list is compiled separate them by most important, work off the list. Pretty soon you will hone these skills and be able to do it without lists.
Laughter is the Best Medicine. When you lose your laughter you lose yourself. You should attempt to laugh everyday about things. The best way to have a good laugh is with another person. Tell them a funny joke, or have them tell you a funny joke. Talk about a fun time you shared and enjoy a good laugh with them. If you are a slapstick kind of person, do something funny and have a laugh about it. Maybe have a fun adventure, whatever you choose to do make sure you enjoy that time.
Express yourself. Expressing your opinions, thoughts, feelings, and affections to the people you care about can be freeing. Those people will most likely return those expressions to you in a positive way. Do not allow yourself to build up anger and frustration because this is bad for you. There is a way to release your anger and frustrations in a healthy way. Go to the gym and workout or hit the bag, are great ways to release your anger.
Learn something new. When you learn something new, you become more pleased with yourself. Take what you learned and share it with someone. Learning is a very important thing for happiness and could serve you well in the future. When you share what you learn with people you care about you provide them with the sense that they are important to you.
Get Physically Active. Being physically active is a super positive way to build your self esteem. Running, jogging, and even walking burns calories and negative thoughts. Do these activities in nature where you can experience some natural wonders. A jog in the outdoors is far better than a run on a treadmill.
Avoid Negativity. When you surround yourself with negative things you become negative. So avoid these situations and places at all costs. Surround yourself with happy and positive things and you will become happy and positive.
Buy that item you’ve saved up for. Like I said before, material things can make you happy. Even though these items are fleeting it is still good to treat yourself to your desires on occasion. Is there a book you’ve wanted to read? Then go buy it and read it.
When you feel like life is getting the best of you instead of you getting the best of life, it is time to look in the mirror. The question you should ask yourself is, “Why am I allowing myself to be unhappy.” Make the simple choice to be happy again. Use some of the tips, or even all of them to be happy again.
