Low fat diets are only semi effective.

Here is the deal. Burn more calories than you take in, that simple

Your  body needs fat. If you do not get enough fat, you end up with dry skin, split ends, brittle nails etc just to name a few.

Yes, that's true. And fat also helps to keep you fuller and to help realize when you are full. If you don't get enough fat in, you may feel hungry all the time.

The fat that you have to avoid is the bad, saturated fats. Good fats like olives, avo's and nuts should still be included in a healthy diet. When you want to lose weight, the best amount of fat you should get in is no more than 3 units of fat a day.

I need to lose weight by Christmas, and I hate any kind of diet, so I'm trying to just eat less, not eat after 7 p.m., drink LOTS of water, and be more active. That's the only kind of diet I can do. I can't restrict certain foods, or I go insane.

I personally prefer carb cycling. I have lost better than 70 pounds in just over four months doing modified carb cycling. The best part was after a few weeks it didn't even feel like a diet. It was just a new way of eating

So many of tips are scary! Watch what you eat. Go on a diet, but don't starve your body of essential carbs & basic nutrients. Eat healthy, avoid junk food and processed foods. Exercising even an hour a week will do wonders.

Spreading that hour of exercise throughout the week is good. Even just walking fast and slow spurts will do wonders. Sort of interval training while walking.

I go for a combination of low glycemic index (low GI) and low glycemic load (low GL) "diet" - and generally, eat less refined carbs. And drink plenty of water.

      1. primalforce profile image60

I agree with keeping an eye on GI and GL. It helps you eat better food and means you will chew your food more, or at least it makes chewing food more, easier. This is called fletcherism and works really well for weight loss as you automatically eat less..

My best friend once told me that I could eat everything I wanted... just not all at the same time.

That was pretty good advice actually, and I do eat what I want but in small portions and I'm a grazer, so I tend to eat little meals and snacks all day long. I always have a full bowl of fresh fruit out on the table for the kids and myself to snack on.

I have found that once I deny myself something, it suddenly becomes the single food I crave the most, so I just don't do that.

I also get in as much exercise during the day as I can. I always do things the hard way like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking my car at the very far end of the parking lot when I'm shopping.  I do lot of walking and now with babysitting my grandson, I'm doing a lot of running around too... LOL!

If you use common sense, portion control and exercise daily you can maintain your proper weight without starving yourself or going on some silly fad diet.

For natural healthy diet, you have to change your life habits. Change way of life. American way of life stinks. Eat easy, different healthy food in small bits. Chew well and long. Enjoy in taste. Think of food while you eat and thanks good for it (even if you not believer). Take time for eating. Eating mills is not just taking a fuel. Prepare your food in old fashion manners. Learn cooking. It is easy! If women all over the world can cook for thousands years, sure you can to. It is lot off joy! Do all your jobs alone for yourself. Don't hire someone to walk your dog. You do it! Look nice! Never go on street without make up, nice dressing, and well manners. Eat with your family. Talk to them. After meal you can drink half glass of wine! Enjoy in life! Be happy with you and your body! Walk more! Do some physical work!
Don't eat to much! Never eat nothing while you watch TV! Don't watch TV (to much). Go out. Try some new sports! Do it with your friends!

That is the best diet I can think of. Good luck!

After 20 years of failure, using different diets and exercise programmes, my partner has recently had some success (loss of 24lbs in 12 weeks) with a self hypnosis weight loss CD.  We are to say the least pleasantly surprised as this programme does not entail following a diet or exercise regime.....it uses mind power alone to change bad eating habits to good ones...which when you think about it, is all you really need to do!   Think and be healthy.

I recently switched to a pescatarian diet. I eat fruits, veggies, and seafood. I need to back off of the carbs because for me, it causes me to gain weight. Limiting my carb intake to a slice of wheat bread or a bowl of oatmeal in the morning helps me loose weight.

Jogging is the best and fasted way to get results. 30 days of jogging will help you shed pure fat fast!

I know of a few different methods that I believe work.. but my absolute preference is making a lifestyle change and switching to a 70% or higher plant based diet.   Eating mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.  The way I lost most of my weight, though, was simply through calorie counting... though I also began to eat healthier at the same time.  Towards  the end of my quest to lose weight I was on a mostly plant based diet, and now that I've achieved my goals I mostly remain on such a diet (though maybe not that 70% I used to be at).

There are so many different types of weight loss diets these days.

Low calorie diets may help for some, but if the calorie intake is too low, you can become fatigued.

High protein diets works for some, but the overload of protein can make you nausea and can cause headaches.

Low fat diets will only work if the fat content isn't restricted too much and if the rest of the diet is balanced and calorie controlled.

Fad diets usually have bad side effects and they can also harm your long term health.

My personal favorite is to just eat healthy, balanced and calorie controlled smaller meals more regularly (6 times a day), to avoid/limit take-aways, sweets and sodas and to eat lots of fruit and veggies. Such a long term healthy diet together with regular exercise is all that you need to lose weight safely and surely.

One more thing which effected is, I only eat boiled vegetables or fresh fruits and soups.

The best diet by far.......is the one were you take in less energy than you need. By either reducing your calorific input i.e. one less doughnut or slice of pizza (or eqivilant)a day and by keeping your energy output the same you will lose some weight-period!  However the biggest mistake people make is they dont adjust their energy inputs as they lose weight. Its simple really-'if you put $50 of gas into your 3 litre engine car once a week, you would'nt expect todo the same if you traded down to a 1.5 litre engine would you?' Our bodies are our engines as we lose weight our need for a constant amount of 'gas' reduces! Bare that in mind as those who weight loss and then plateau tend toget dispondant and then relapse!

Add a zero to the number of pounds you want to be.

          Example: 130lbs = 1300 cals.

Stick to that formula and you will always be in your goal weight range. You can also use this same formula to loose weight.

I can still eat what I love and loose weight. I recommend it for anyone who wants to lost weight but not give up any type of their favourite food. The pro points are perfect and it motivates me to do extra hours of exercise a day - with breaks in between of course. And has made me love eating fruit and veg. Please check out my blog on the diet.

Don't drastically cut down what you eat, or just cut out all fats - it's incredibly unhealthy and you aren't doing your body any good. Simply eating less will lower your metabolic rate, meaning that you'll gain more weight once you start eating normally again, and it'll be harder to shift. Not to mention the fact that you're starving your body of nutrients.

The problem with diets is that they're short-term - most of the fad diets around actually do more harm than good.

Eat healthily, eat more protein for breakfast and spread it out throughout the day, exercise, eat 4-5 smaller meals rather than 2-3 large ones, don't eat dinner too late (or too large a dinner), don't stress eat (go out for a walk instead), cut out additives and simple carbs/sugars. Generally just look after yourself - keep moving, eat well and try to get enough sleep, drink enough water and don't lead a stressful lifestyle. The key to being healthy and in shape isn't to just do a master cleanse or something for a week and eat crisps and drink booze daily for the rest of the year - it's a lifestyle.

Also (as I'm just writing a massive list):
          - Cook from scratch. I have 2-3 jobs and manage to do this most days - it doesn't actually take that long if you plan the food for your week in advance
          - Get calories from quality sources - 1500 calories a day from McDonalds is far worse than 1500 from home-cooked, healhy meals
          - Keep track of what you eat - it's easy to lose track of what you're snacking on

Eating more frequently to "jumpstart your metabolism" is one of the oldest myths in nutrition.  Recent studies have debunked it completely.  i'm sure if you do a search online you can find one.  If I eat 5 small meals totalling 3,000 calories, it is exactly the same as if I ate 1 enormous meal totalling 3,000 calories.  Of course eating that much in one meal is difficult and is probably easier if broken up.  it's about the insulin spikes that your receive after meals.  When you eat multiple meals, you will spike more often, but when you eat one giant meal you only spike once but to a much larger degree.  so in the end it equals out.
It is true that your metabolism will slow if you do not eat, but this will take much longer than a day.  You should also research intermittent fasting.  It's becoming quite popular and works very well.

I think you may have misread what I was saying - the reference to lowering your metabolic rate was separate from the advice to eat throughout the day.

It's funny, i just wrote my first hub about this topic.  Losing fat is a numbers game.  It's all about calories in vs calories out.  if you expend more calories than you take in, your body will tap its energy reserves (fat), to make up the difference.
The quality of food is a different story.  I mentioned in my article about the professor from Kansas State that ate twinkies for 10 weeks and lost 27 pounds.  Though he was only eating twinkies, the amount of calories he was consuming were considerably lower than he usually ate.  His LDL levels dropped and his HDL levels incread.  Which means his cholesterol levels were healthier than before.
Of course I'm not advocating eating garbage processed foods to lose fat.  The quality of food plays more of a role in the efficiency of your body and it's basic functions.  But it's the calorie numbers that are what count in losing the pounds.  Eat whole foods and go into a caloric deficit and the fat will melt off.

Here is a sure fire way to loose.
            1. Eat small 5 to 6 small meals daily every 2 to 3 hours.
            2. Eat lean proteins (eggs, poultry, lean beef and fish) with complex carbs (Steamed veggies, salads, nuts, fruit etc). Lean proteins actually turn on the metabolic engine and burn calories faster.
            3. Aerobic exercise your choice 3 times a week for 12 continuous minutes.
            4. establish a weight training program that hits every body part once a week.
            5. Use the amino acids l-arginine, l-glutamine, the BCAA and whey protein
Amino acids will actually help you loose weight. check out my recipe

The only thing that works for me is to keep a food diary on an app on my mobile phone. Its brilliant as you just type in what you have eaten for that day, and what shop you bought it from and it works out how many calories you have consumed.

Based on your age, sex, weight etc it will work out how many calories you should be consuming daily that will help you lose weight HEALTHILY. As long as I stick to the required number of calories (in my case 1200) , I can still eat treats so I do not feel like I am starving myself or denying myself the foods I enjoy. I just eat smaller portions of it.

You can log your weight weekly to, and it shows you a graph with your progress which is really helpful. You can type in what exercise you have done too, and it will deduct the calories from the food you have eaten.

I think being more aware of what you eat is half the battle.

From experience what works for one person doesn't  necessarily work for everyone else

I've recently published a hub on Eating disorders in athletes and it's quite worrying that many factors are used as considerations for eating disorders.

My mantra has always been live for today- in moderation

Glutony is only a sin if indulged regularly

I think you have to enjoy your food as part of any weight loss program

I'm currently putting things in place to lose around 10 kilos and have done the following

Remove all biscuits, sweets and chocolate from the cupboards
Drinking green tea for it's thermogenic effect
Pay attention the what i'm eating and ensuring it doesn't have high levels of fat.
          Getting plenty of exercise

        working
