My mother has gone back to school to get her nursing degree. She's not happy about the work enviornment. There's a lot of bickering and inner politics and stuff.
A career path that is experiencing just the same amount of demand in the medical field but which is better paying, lower stress, better respect is Physician Assistant. The only Nursing gig that is on par with it is CRNA...and that is a graduate school training program just like PA is.
I know 3 people who have switched careers and gone into nursing. It is a good career and there are plenlty of jobs. However what most people don't realize is that healthcare is not a 9-5 job. They also don't understand that you must "pay your dues' by working off shifts and holidays until you get seniority.
