God had a perfect plan when He created heaven and earth. He said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so (Genesis 1:11).

And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good (Genesis 1:12).

God could forsee the future when man would sin and diseases would abound. In His compassion for the masses, God had already created the different herbs to cure the illness, and the bitter melon or gourd is one of the herbs.

BITTER GOURD

Bitter gourd or bitter melon is a tropical and subtropical vine grown in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. It is among the most bitter of all fruits. The various varieties differ in the shape and bitterness of the fruit.

The bitter gourd has two types. One is about 20 cm long, and pale green in colour and the other is smaller and less than 10 cm long with a darker green colour. When ripe, it becomes more bitter and the colour turns reddish orange.

It is a popular ingredient in some southeast Asian salads.

Asia and Africa use the bitter gourd in their native medicines. People are also turning to alternative and natural medicine rather than taking medicine, chemo or radiation. They feel alternative medicine is their last hope, especially for cancer.

Extracts of bitter melon 'can block breast cancer'

blocking powers, say researchers.

Scientists found key ingredients of the green and knobbly bitter melon fruit interfered with chemical pathways involved in cancer growth.

It turned off signals telling the breast cancer cells to divide and switched on signals encouraging them to commit suicide.

Experts told Cancer Research journal more trials were needed.
Although promising as an anti-cancer agent, trials in animals and then humans are still needed, study co-author Dr Rajesh Agarwal from the University of Colorado, US, said.

And there is no proof that eating lots of bitter melon would offer any cancer protection, he said.

I love the bitter gourd. Obviously, someone has to be really acquired with its flavor. But it lends a nice character to every dish. I am also aware of its medicinal properties especially in treating diabetes. There are even food supplements that are made from bitter gourd. Interesting hub you've got there.

Bitter gourd is an acquired taste. Normally people do not like bitter taste. I would not agree that it lends a nice character to every dish. Anyway, to each his own taste.
