Natural Remedies for Common Childhood Ailments Already Right In Your Kitchen
I have always believed that the earth was designed to take care of us, just as we were designed to take care of the earth. I am never one to knock modern medicine, but being from the islands, I am a strong believer in the natural approach to wellness and healing whenever possible. In this article I share 4 of my most frequently used natural remedies for the things that ail my kids the most
Kids just eat! They don’t think about heartburn or acid indigestion, or reflux…If it tastes good now, then they’re eating it now. But when the digestive troubles start, before you reach for the Pepto-Bismol:
An excellent remedy for an upset stomach is Chamomile tea. This can be bought in any supermarket. Chamomile relaxes the smooth muscles of the stomach wall, and eases the pain and discomfort associated with an upset stomach
Miraculously also, I discovered that chamomile relieves acid indigestion on contact. The moment it gets into the stomach, the acidity is gone. Your or your child’s very next burp will be acid free.
Throughout each of my three pregnancies, chamomile was a real life saver from heartburn, and with no harmful side effects.
If fresh ginger is also used with the chamomile it relieves the nausea that sometimes accompanies an upset or acidic stomach.
A wedge of lime and sweetened with honey is the most delicious way to have this tea.
For those kids who hate tea, its just as good ice cold.
Children come down with this much more than you may realize. It is the painful accumulation of water in the ear canal, which leads to a fungal or bacterial infection, most frequent in the summer, when the kids do more swimming, and may be a source of discomfort for several weeks if left untreated.
Hot Tip! – To eliminate the moisture in the ears, , every time your kids get their ears wet, whether or not you suspect an infection. Pull the flap of the ear up and out to straighten the ear canal and aim your hair dryer into your ear from 18 to 20 inches away. Use either a warm or cool setting, but let the dryer blow for 30 seconds. That will dry the ear, eliminating the moist conditions bacteria and fungi find most attractive for growth.
A miracle remedy for this common childhood ailment is garlic and olive oil.
Garlic (Allium sativum) has been shown to be effective in treating swimmer's ear. As a natural antibiotic, garlic is a useful herb for inflammation of the outer ear. Garlic juice is added to olive oil & one to three drops of this mixture may be placed in the infected ear every three hours
Using a kitchen mortar (ceramic or glass),press one or two cloves of fresh garlic into fresh virgin olive oil. Press the garlic enough to break up the clove so the garlic juice mixes with the olive oil.
Strain into a clear glass jar and allow to sit in the sunlight for approximately an hour. Use a small dropper to place a single drop of the garlic oil into each of your child’s ear canals every 3 hours for 4 days. Store covered in the refridgerator
Garlic is a natural antibiotic and the olive oil has the added benefit of being a natural soothing remedy for ear aches since the beginning of time.
Wait for a full minute, with the treated ear facing the ceiling after dropping into each ear. Make sure you have a clean towel spread out under the head in case any excess oil runs back out of the ear, when you go to do the do the next ear.
(Please be advised that Swimmer’s ear is different from an Ear Infection, which does need antibiotic treatment) Swimmers ear usually comes without a fever, but should be checked by a doctor nonetheless.
If we could just get our kids to sit conscientiously over the plate of broccoli (although my kids love broccoli, thank God!), lettuce, asparagus, carrots, bran flakes, and other sources of fiber available in the farmers market, then we really wouldn’t need to talk about this topic now would we? But the ironic reality is that, most fiber rich food sources taste pretty bland, or downright horrible, if I may just be candid here. So in spite of our best efforts to get children the right choices in foods from all the food groups, they still sometimes end up a little constipated. Well one really cool alternative to Milk of Magnesia, Glycerin suppositories, or Kiddie enemas, (yucky yuck) is to simply make apple juice a regular part of your children’s juice intake. About 4-6 ounces a day from 2-5 yrs old and 6-8 ounces a day, if your child is 6 -10 years old. Apple Juice contains sorbitol, which has a natural stool softening property.
Prunes - are another great way to keep your children regular. About once per week as a treat. A bowl of vanilla icecream with prunes chopped or whole is a sweet way to keep the bowels going. (If you do prunes, cut the apple juice by an ounce or two per serving)
Common Cold –
This one is the most frequent complaint of all. Now that children are back in school, they are once again exposed to the many germs out there that you really can’t do much to protect them from. But take heart because there are a few preventive measures you can take to step up your children’s immunity so that the cold germ has a hard time to take root.
Make sure their multivitamin contains the maximum allowable amount of Vitamins C and D.
Keep their antioxidant levels high by making fresh fruit and vegetable juices and frosties a regular part of their their diet
Purchase and keep on hand lozenges that contains zinc. Zinc is an essential mineral that is found in every cell in our body, and it is required for the development and activation of T-lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cell that helps fight infection.
Giving your child lozenges made of zinc gluconate can help shorten the length of a cold. Most forms of zinc work equally well, but if you're trying to prevent your child from catching a cold, or help your child get over a cold, use zinc lozenges or a zinc spray made of zinc gluconate. Take 15 mg of zinc daily (the amount in most multivitamins). Because zinc can block copper absorption, make sure that your child's multivitamin supplement also contains approximately 1 mg of copper
Water is a perfect tonic which we take for granted, and it is a precious natiral resource that has many great benefits for the body. Children mostly turn their noses up at water. I personally insist with my children that they each comnsume a minimum of one 16oz bottle of water per day. It helps to keep them healthier by flushing out harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses that usually make them sick, and keeps their skin hydrated.
Yes...the earth is full of natural resources that can make us well, and surprisingly your kitchen is ofetn loaded with things that can make your kids feel better too. These are just a few of the things I use to help my kids get over their boo boos...
