Pharmacy Compounding Allows For Custom Made Drugs

There was a time when all medicines prescribed by doctors, were made up of a combination of basic drugs put together by a qualified pharmacist. The mass production of drugs had since made this practice redundant and pharmacists became dispensers of drugs that were manufactured in different dosages, to fit the requirement of patients.

Pharmacy Compounding

The science and art of preparing medications that are exactly as per the personal requirements of patients is called pharmacy compounding. These medications are based on the prescription given by medical practitioners that details the ingredients required. The pharmacist then mixes together all these individual medicines to get the exact dosage form and strength required by that particular patient. Pharmacists are then able to ensure that ingredients that a patient is otherwise allergic to are avoided, and the resulting medication has the flavor, form of dosage and strength that the patient wants and will benefit from. Drugs Are Safer With Compounding

Patients can have problems with certain medications that cause stomach upsets. Some medicines have bitter tastes, while there are others that certain patients find it difficult to swallow. The dosages prescribed by medical caregivers may not be made available by manufacturers. At times, patients have a number of medicines prescribed, which they find difficult to keep track of. All these problems can be solved by trained compounding pharmacists, who can offer custom made medicines that are completely as the doctor prescribed.

Pharmacy compounding has again made its presence in medicine, no doubt helped by the very high prices quoted by many manufacturers of standard drugs. The technology and techniques of preparing these custom made drugs has also changed to greatly benefit patients who are now able to access drugs that suit their individual needs. The effectiveness of the medicine is also greater, and side effects are drastically reduced.
