Use Dietary Supplements and Eye Drops to maintain Great Eye Health

Updated on September 7, 2013

Your Eyes Work Every day Just Like The Rest Of Your Body

I wear glasses and use electronic devices such as the computer, television, cell phone daily. I sit in front of the computer all day during working hours and then late night at home completing personal tasks. This lifestyle puts a lot of stress on my eyes. It doesnât matter which lifestyle you live because as long as you are around the computer or television or other electronic screens often you need to be concerned with the health of your eyes. I visit my Optometrist yearly and was advised to take supplements to maintain great eye health.

I also find that sometimes, my eyes feel tired from using the computer so long even when I take regular breaks. Therefore, I also invested in buying drops to ensure that I kept my eyes moisture when needed.

In this lens I want to share with you the dietary supplements and eye drops that I use. Please feel free to share your suggestions on my Guestbook at the end of the lens.

My lifestyle

I started wearing glasses when I was a teenager. I didn't like wearing glasses so I visited the Optometrist regularly and hoped I would not need them. I tried to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables but I realized that my eyes got worse each year. I also tried to stay off the television so I would complete chores at home or go outside. Afterwards like most students I had to use the computer to research various topics and complete different assignments.

When I started working I had a workstation in the office so I was around the computer for more than eight hours. Usually when I get home I read books, newspaper or magazines. However, with social media, news, and websites on various topics such as finance, health and technology I realized that I was spending a lot of time on the computer. Even if I do not use the computer I am using my Samsung cell phone. This meant that I was always staring at one device screen or another.

As a result I asked my Optometrist about improving my vision and she recommended using various products dedicated to eye care. I add these products as a regular part of my budget because my health is very important to me.

Using dietary supplements

There are many reasons why persons need to take vitamins and minerals to maintain great health. Sometimes, you don’t get to eat a wide variety of foods and sometimes the foods you eat are of low quality. Taking supplements ensures that you got all the minerals and vitamins that your body needs. Your eyes are a part of your body but it needs a different vitamin to maintain great vision. I wish we could all have 20/20 vision but the stress of work and personal life causes damage to our health.

So what do you do when you cannot get to eat a wide variety of nutritious meals? Well, I take dietary supplements as needed. I also use the computer and other electronic devices daily so I always need to maintain great vision. This means that I take those with Lutein in it. Lutein is specially formulated for eye health. According to About.com, Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids. Lutien is required for normal vision because it is found in retinas of our eyes. It helps to reduce damage done by free radicals. You can read more about About.com.

Supplement brands that I use

I use to take ICAPS Eye Vitamin Lutein & Zeaxanthin Formula but disliked the large size of the pills. They were coated so you might find it easier to swallow. The pills are made with various minerals thus making it into Multivitamin as well. However, the main ingredient to pay attention to is Lutein & Zeaxanthin. This is what scientists have indicated works well to maintain eye health. The American Optometric Association has a great article explaining how it works.

Later, I found Nature’s Bounty with Lutein as the sole ingredient. I wanted to specifically target my eye health so that is what I use now. When you have a dedicated eye vitamins and minerals you can use another Multivitamin to target other health needs that you may have. The tablets are small, soft and coated so I find them easy to swallow. It is better to have more than one option to choose from as your health needs will vary overtime.

Foods that contain these nutrients include egg yolks, corn, orange, spinach, kale, broccoli, green beans and collards. This means that it is important to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to get the best nutrition for your body. I love eating fruits as snacks and drinking fruit juices. I also eat vegetables at my three main meals per day. I make stir-fry or eat them as fresh salads. However, I do not always get to the right portions or add as much variety as I would like. Therefore, I have to balance my health in other ways.

Using eye drops

I am sure that most persons have used them at some point in their lives. Usually when my eyes feel tired I use them to soothe it. I never use it often but the more I use the computer is the more I need to ensure that my eyes have the proper moisture. Eye exercises or short breaks are usually recommended for persons who work regularly with a computer. However, even with dietary supplements your eyes might feel tired.

Eye drop brands that I use

I always try to have more than one brand of a product that I stick with. This allows me to alternate when needed so that I can continue to compare the quality being offered by the product. It also allows me to keep abreast of the newest products offered by either brand. I started off using ‘VISINE Advanced Relief’. Later, I added the Clear Eyes Triple Action Relief to my favourites. They both work great and my eyes do feel better but remember than as soon as you use the computer again that your eyes will start to feel tired again. It is best to use them as soon as your eyes feel tired, I also use them at nights because I can rest my eyes properly then. Of course, the manufacturer’s recommend that you only use them occasionally so please follow their advice. I focus mainly on using dietary supplements and avoid being dependent on eye drops.
