What is Psoriasis? Understanding the Skin Disease

Psoriasis is a skin disorder that affects the skin badly, making it to appear dry, itch severely, become scaly, with yellowish red patches like "eczema" on the skin. It is a non-contagious skin disorder, but can be chronic and reoccurring. Psoriasis can be a life threatening disorder if not properly treated. There are useful treatments that are very helpful in reducing or eliminating the harmful effects of this skin disorder but you will have to use these recommended treatments strictly to achieve a lasting cure.

Psoriasis is caused by a sudden malfunction in the immune system, thereby causing inflammations in the white blood cells. Normally, it takes cells about a week or more to produce, and about the same time to die off while new cells form, but when there is an autoimmune defect, it takes cells less that 3-4 days to reproduce but still weeks to die off. This in turn, causes the body to have an over accumulation of both newly produced and old cells clustering the body. When the body cannot take any more cells, these cells move to the top of the skin causing the skin to break and damage, creating white scaly / reddish yellow patches on the skin.

There are several types of psoriasis found in different parts of the body , and they all have their distinctions when it comes to the symptoms and signs that each of these types of psoriasis possess. The many types of psoriasis are:

  1. Guttate psoriasis
  2. Erythrodermic psoriasis
  3. inverse psoriasis
  4. scalp psoriasis
  5. psoriasis arthritis
  6. Palmter psoriasis
  7. flexural psoriasi
  8. plaque psoriasis
  9. pustular psoriasis

Most sufferers of psoriasis contacted this skin disorder by indulging in activities such as, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, being overweight, dirtiness, sweat and many more.
