10 Ideas (x2) to Celebrate Valentine's Day

Celebrate Valentine's Day or Not?

Some people say that Valentine's Day is just a Hallmark holiday. So should you celebrate it or not? This is really a personal choice. I personally choose to celebrate it because it's a day set aside to celebrate love. You don't have to exchange expensive gifts, but you can choose to celebrate your love. Why not celebrate it on this day, February 14th every year?

If you're creative, you can also buy a tube of icing and decorate the tops, to make them look a little fancier.

Poem for Valentine's Day

This is a poem that I copied into a photo editing program, changed the font to Courier, then added an image effect to make the paper look old. This would look really cool printed out, with torn paper edges.

10 No Cost or Low Cost Ideas for Celebrating Valentine's Day

  1. Make a Romantic Dinner at Home
In lieu of fighting crowds on Valentine's Day, you may opt to have a quiet, romantic dinner at home. Clean the house, setup a nice table with a tablecloth and candles. Pull out the fancy dishes if you have them. And cook something special for that special person in your life. Turn on some music and enjoy a quiet dinner together.
  2. Buy a Valentine's Day Card
This option can be combined with any of the other suggestions. A card can be given with dinner, chocolates, flowers, or on its own. Funny cards can be a good choice if you want to bring a smile to the face of your special someone. Or, buy a card with a romantic, serious tone to let them know how much they mean to you.
  3. Make a Card
What says, "I love you" more than a card made by your own hands? A handmade card can be simple, or elaborate. The simplest way to make a card is to get a piece of paper or cardstock, fold it in half, and write a heart-felt message for your loved one.
To get a little fancier, buy some special cardstock available in individual pieces at your local craft store, and make a mini book with a few pages, with special notes on each page. Puch a hole in one corner and attache them all together with a piece of yard, a paper fastener (from your local office supply store) or a piece of ribbon.
Or, if you're computer savvy, you could use a program like Microsoft Office to create and print your own card.
  4. Give a Massage
Most men and women love massages. It is very relaxing, is appreciated by the receiver, and free to the giver. If you are tight on money this Valentine's Day, this makes an excellent gift. The massage could be a back massage, or even a foot massage. Use your imagination. To make it more fun, create your own gift certificate, redeemable for 1 massage, and let your partner choose when to take you up on that massage.
  5. Run a Bath for your Partner
This is something that is FREE, and can be very romantic, and relaxing, for your partner. To make it a little more special, consider these optional add-ons:
    a. Add bath salt or bubble bath to the water
    b. Light some scented candles in the bathroom, then dim the lights
    c. Play some relaxing, soft music in the background
  6. Bake Cookies or Cupcakes
If your loved one has a sweet tooth, what better gift than some homemade baked goods. Very inexpensive to make, and usually quite appreciated. Add a sweet handwritten note to the pile of goodies and the Valentine's gift is complete.
  7. Write a Poem
If you have any kind of flair for writing, creating a poem from your heart, specifically for your loved one can create a gift that will be cherished for years. If you aren't that creative, search online to find a poem you like, write it down, and give it to your special someone saying, "This poem reminds me of you."
  8. Create a "Sweetheart Award"
You can easily create something fun like a Sweetheart Award using a program like MS Office. The one pictured to the right was created in Word using New > Certificates > Gift Certificates > Sweetheart Certificates. You may want to customize the wording to make it unique for your gift.
  9. Create a Coupon for a Service
Create these coupons from MS Office, or just by writing something down on a piece of paper as a promise to deliver a service in the future. In the picture on the right, a coupon was downloaded in MS Office. In Word click New > Certificates > Coupons. The sample is a Mother's Day coupon set, so would need to be customized, replacing "Mother" with the name of your loved one.
  10. Movie Night at Home
This is a great night at home on a shoestring budget. If you have children, spring for a babysitter so you and your partner can have a little alone time. Clean up the house first. Rent a movie, pop some popcorn, and snuggle on the couch. If you top it off with a card, that would be extra nice.

10 Quick and Easy Ideas for Celebrating Valentine's Day

If you don't mind spending a little money for this lover's holiday, here are some quick and easy ideas to celebrate this day of love.

  1. Go Out To Dinner
This is a very common way to celebrate this couples holiday. Valentine's Day is a busy day for restaurants, so you may; need to make reservations. Some restaurants serve a special set menu on this day, and often times it's fairly pricey. But, there's no substitute for dinner out on the 14th. Go out to your favorite restaurant, or try something new.
  2. Give your Loved One a Box of Chocolates
Yes, this is a very traditional way to celebrate Valentine's Day. You can buy chocolates at just about any grocery store or drug store. Chocolates come in mixed varieties, in heart shaped boxes, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, just about anything you can think of.
OR...Give your Loved One Candy from a Local Candy Store

If you like the idea of giving chocolates, but want to get something a little more special, you may purchase chocolate covered strawberries at a local candy shop. Or, buy something a little different, like fudge, cupcakes or another favorite of your special somebody. This is a little step-up from just a box of chocolates, but costs a little more too.
  3. Buy Flowers
Most people (though not all) enjoy receiving flowers. The most traditional flowers to give on Valentine's Day, are red roses. Usually, one doesn't give yellow roses on this special day, because yellow roses indicate "friends." However, red roses aren't the only flowers that can be given. Bouquets of mixed flowers can be very beautiful, as well as lilies, or whatever flowers are your partner's favorites.
  4. Buy a Stuffed Animal
This option isn't for everyone. Not everyone likes, or appreciates these cute and fuzzy toys. But if your partner is fond of the cutsie kind of things, this may be just the thing to make them say, "Awwww...." Just be sure to put some thought into which little critter you purchase, so it reflects your partner's likes.
  5. Buy Jewelry
If you're purchasing a gift for a female, jewelry may be a great choice. Some men like jewelry too, so you'll need to know what your partners likes. Buy something expensive, or just something to show a token of your love.
  6. Buy a One-of-a-Kind or Handmade Item
These days, it's fairly easy to buy unique handmade items online. This kind of gift is special and takes some thought and a little planning ahead. One of my favorite places to buy handmade gifts is Etsy. Another good site is ArtFire.com. Visit Etsy or ArtFire and search for "Valentines" or "Heart" to see what items come up. Or get creative and search for something unique that your special someone will enjoy.
  7. Give an Unusual or Quirky Gift
Sometimes the best gift is one that only your partner will understand and appreciate. This type of gift will show them how much you care, and how well you know them.
  8. Buy Perfume or Cologne
Receiving perfume or cologne is a very personal thing. If you've been with your partner long enough, you probably know what they like. If your relationship is still new, and this seems a bit steep, consider a lighter alternative, such as scented body lotion.
  9. Give Lingerie
OK, this isn't for everyone. You've got to know your partner and know what he/she likes and whether or not they will feel this is an appropriate gift. If you both are on the same page, lingerie can help spice up a romantic evening.
  10. Buy a Night Away
Hire a babysitter if you have children. Book a hotel room in a nice hotel room for a night. Get away from your life for a night, order in room service, bring a bottle of chilled wine or champagne if you like.
