A Very Humble Christmas Tree (Poem)
Tumbling Tumbleweed
A Very Humble Christmas Tree (Poem)
One time far out in the Desert Southwest,
a rancher wondered what he could possibly
do to brighten up his little ranch house for
his wife and kids for Christmas day, yes for
Christmas day. Late at night, when his chores
were done, he managed to whittle some toys
out of wood in the barn and made a simple green
stone pendant for his wife, but they lived too far
away to cut a nice tall pine. As he cleared out some
tumbleweeds from the corral into a pile, he noticed
its pyramid shape and scratched his chin.
A Christmas Tree of Tumbleweed
After all had fallen asleep on Christmas Eve, he
dragged inside that pile of tumbleweeds and placed
them in his very small livingroom and got a can of
whitewash to dab the pile to make it look like snow
and took some chili pods from the kitchen to
dangle on the tree, topped with a cardboard angel
painted white, and placed the pendant and toys
underneath. On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
they came downstairs to laugh with glee at that
Christmas tree and returned his love with big tight
hugs and shiny tears streaming down their cheeks.
Many a time have we seen such "trees" in the American Southwest.
