Baptism or Christening Gift Ideas for Baby

Baby Baptisms & Christenings

Baptism, or Christening, is a time when baby is brought into the religion of her parents. Generally, it is a Catholic ceremony and is an occasion for gift giving. If you’re not familiar with what’s appropriate to gift or if you’ve just run out of ideas, here are some thoughts to get you started.

Most people do not give clothing or toys for a Baptism. It’s considered more of a sacred and holy time and less of a commercial celebration. There are Christian bookstores both online and brick and mortar that carry a wide array of Baptism or Christening gifts. When in doubt, go with cash. The parents will likely be starting a bank account for the new baby and you can happily add to her first deposits.

White, pink, or blue bibles are often a nice choice and can be engraved with the baby’s name. As baby grows older, she’ll be able to read it along with the inscription you write in it to commemorate her special day.

Bibles are not only a beautiful keepsake, but also a practical gift that the child can use for learning.  Many children's bibles are filled with sketches and drawings depicting the major stories contained within the bible as well.

Personalized Crosses

Crosses are also popular gifts. You can either choose a Baptism cross in porcelain decorated for baby or a piece of jewelry with a cross on it. For boys, often a rosary with a cross on it or a wall cross are given. You can start a charm bracelet for a little baby girl with a cross and other religious symbols on it that she’ll wear when she grows.

Cash or Savings Bonds

It’s traditional also to give cash for a Baptism. How much is up to you and will depend on your budget as well as how well you know the family. Wrap your cash gift in a nice money envelope or in a narrow box with a pretty ribbon. Make it look special.

Savings bonds are a time-honored classic gift too. The idea behind them is that you purchase them for a fraction of the dollar amount and they grow in value as the child grows. Once the pre-set number of years goes by, the child can cash them in for much more than you paid for them. It’s an investment gift that pays off nicely for the child in the end.

Keepsakes such Statues or Plaques

Porcelain statues, such as the Precious Moments collection, are darling ideas. They so sweetly represent the new life and happiness of the event. And your little bundle of joy will love to look at it as she grows older. They’re ideal for girls or boys.

Plaques with Christening sayings on them are also very popular. You can find lovely variations online. The plaque will hang in baby’s room as a reminder of her important first celebration.

There are all sorts of collectibles you can have personalized for baby from keepsake boxes to ornaments, snow globes and trains. They bear a Baptism theme and are very appropriate to commemorate the moment.

Custom Photo Frames

Photo frames are also a nice idea. You can get them in white porcelain or in pewter or wood. Many places will engrave them for you with baby’s name and the date of the Baptism. You can include a cute picture of baby in it if you like.

Keepsake Bibs & Blankets

A beautiful personalized christening blanket can be used on the child's special day and then for years to come.

Choose from fleece blankets or classic knitted shawls that are usually embroidered with a cross along with baby's name and their christening or birth date. Sets such as the one shown to the right often include other keepsakes such as a plush prayer lamb or a cross-embroidered bib.

Cute ideas. I am usually at a loss for ideas, so this really helps. I like those personalized crosses, that'd be a very neat keepsake for the child!

These are great baptism gift ideas. The blankets or photo frames would be my first choices.

I love the idea of personalized items for a baptism gift. They are meaningful for the children and can last a lifetime. These gifts are the ones that carry special meaning and the children can learn from them as they grow older.

This is a great article. I wish I'd seen it before, but those bibles are adorable and the crosses are a great idea too for them to have in their nursery and room as they grow up.

My favorite baptism gift is a personalized blanket, I have given one to each of my three godchildren. I think it's meaningful and useful at the same time. I also love the personalized crosses shown here.
