Best Inexpensive and Personal Gift Ideas

Updated on October 18, 2014

So You Need a Gift for Someone Special?

As we get older and set in our ways, we usually are a bit more financially stable. As we need things or desire to make a purchase, we most likely will do so if the item is something we truly want. This, in turn, makes it difficult for our loved ones to provide a gift for us when a celebration arises.

Many of us that are not materialistic individuals don’t usually realize the nature of robbing someone’s joy of giving. Many of us feel we don’t want our loved ones spending their hard earned money on an item we will probably never use. Keeping that in mind, we have all been taught that it’s the thought that counts, not the gift itself.

This hub is to demonstrate the various ways to provide a personal gift that is sentimental more than useful, and is a labor of love, not as simple as swiping a credit card.

Artistic Ability and Modern Technology Make the Most Personal Gifts

With modern technology at our fingertips, use your photos as daily memories printed on a coffee mug, travel mug, calendar, portable leather bound picture books, t-shirts, hats, blankets, key chains, and many other items used often. There are even etched glass figurines with your photo that can be made for your loved one. They are absolutely beautiful!

If you have an ounce of creativity, you can design your own gifts and order them online. Most of these items are under $20 and can be shipped within one week or less. In addition to the photos you may want to add, there is an array of clip art and bubbles for quotes. There are choices of color, patterns, sizes and fonts to use to customize your one of a kind gift.

Just about any discount store, department store, or drug store with a photo department can assist you in creating a wonderful gift for your loved one. There are also websites that are in the business of graphic arts including your personal photos. Printerpix.com and Shutterfly.com are just a couple.

Home Made and Personalized or Monogrammed Gifts

Sometimes something as simple as a letter or poem can be touching to the gift recipient, especially if you have printed it on decorated stationery. You could take it a step further and have it laminated, or display it in a picture frame. Be sure to sign and date your work. After all, you are the artist, poet, and creator of this wonderful gift.

A personal photo digital video disk (DVD’s) is special gifts as well. You may be required to have specific software on your computer in order to create this masterpiece. If you do not have the necessary software, you can go to a photo store and they can make one for you if you provide the photos. This, again, is another inexpensive but awesome gift. In some cases, you can add music to your DVD gift.

If you are crafty with your hands and less so with a computer or recent technology, feel free to go to a craft store and open your creative mind. Front door decorations with a personalized name can be easily constructed. Door wreaths and centerpieces for all seasons are easy and beautiful to make. Bird houses, chimes, and ceramic statues are also labors of love and will be appreciated by your loved one.

Many people enjoy a framed copy or booklet of their family tree. Ancestry.com has some great offers and can help find the dates of birth, death, and marriage, as well as addresses and occupations of unknown relatives.

For That Someone who has Everything

For those who are picky and have everything they want, you can rarely go wrong with a humorous gift, an edible gift, or a disposable gift. Funny t-shirts for working in the yard to give the neighborhood a giggle or silly pajamas can be worn during family visits. It’s even more fun when there are several matching silly pajamas walking around the house during a family holiday or reunion.

You can’t go wrong with food, EVER. If you make your loved one’s favorite baked goods and design the presentation of the plate with the food. Use doilies and decorative candies to enhance the appearance of the dish.

Disposable gifts also make great gifts. If your loved one enjoys working with his or hands, consider a small purchase of a puzzle, or beads and a jewelry making kit. You can give a Bedazzle so that the recipient has the opportunity to decorate their own clothes and accessories. Sculpting clay, gift certificates to ceramic classes, tickets to a show, or computer software and/or games. These items may cost you a bit more, but they are options to consider.
