Great Gift Ideas for Your Valentine

Updated on February 9, 2012

Valentines Day is fast approaching. Do you have a Valentine? Need some gift ideas?

First dates are nerve racking enough, never mind trying to figure out what sort of gift you should give your Valentine. One thing to consider is what type of gift you'd like to give: one that you can just show up with on the big night or one that you can send the following day. Another thing to keep in mind is the size of the gift. Your date probably won't want to carry something heavy around all night long, so small gifts work best on the date night. Bigger gifts are better to send the following day with a little note to say you had a good time.

Also remember some gifts are a little awkward to give, so stay in your comfort zone. Your date wants to see you relaxed not nervous. To avoid feeling awkward or nervous, simple gifts work best.

Check out these gift ideas.

Gift Idea #1: Flowers

Flowers are a common choice for both a Valentines Day and a first date gift. To avoid coming on too strong, a single flower is a great idea. It's sweet and affordable. Both you and your date will be comfortable with this no-strings-attached gift. Though roses are beautiful and romantic, they're a little too intimate for a first date. However, you may be able to get away with them on Valentines Day.

Pretty Less-Intimate Flower Ideas:

- Carnations
- Lilacs
- Daisies
- Irises
- Orchids

Gift Idea #2: Chocolate

Who doesn't love chocolate? This is another common, traditional Valentines day date gift. No one can say no to chocolate, except maybe someone who's allergic. So make sure your date is not allergic. For a first date, a small box of chocolates will do. Don't buy them from the corner store though, lest you wish to seem tacky. Consider buying assorted chocolate, unless you know for sure what your dates preference is. You wouldn't want to buy her a box of milk chocolates only to discover she prefers dark. Whatever you do, don't go overboard. Keep it simple and comfortable.

Chocolate Ideas:

- Hershey Bliss
- Dove
- Ghiraraldi
- Russel Stoffers

Gift Idea #3: Stuffed Animals

Most females can appreciate a cute and cuddley stuffed animal for a Valentines day gift. Don't bring an enormous stuffed animal though as this can be overbearing. Small, cute and simple is the best way to go. However for a first date, steer clear of stuffed animals bearing messages that imply commitment, like "I love you". Start slow, pace yourself and don't rush into things.

Stuffed Animal ideas:
- Teddy bears
- Stuffed Puppies
- TY Beanie babies
- Stuffed Kitties

Gift Idea #4: Perfume

This is another common Valentines Day gift. Though this may be one of those kinds of gifts you might want to send the day after your date with a little note. The first thing to consider if you're thinking of getting your Valentine perfume is whether or not she uses fragrance. Believe it or not a lot of women don't. Why waste money on a gift she'll never use? Another thing to think about is whether or not she has a particular scent she prefers. This may require some digging. Finally think of pricing. If you're on tight budget consider buying her scented bath products or body mists.

Perfume Ideas
- Sex and the City - Kiss or Midnight or Crush (Love, Lust and Fantasy may imply something you don't wish to imply)
- Estee Lauder - Beautiful for Women
- Prada - Infusion D'iris
- Ralph Lauren - Romance
- Calvin Klein - Eternity for Women
- Chanel No. 5

Gift Idea #5: Edible Arrangment

Edible Arrangements are a new spin on fruit baskets. Consider buying a beautiful fruit bouquet instead of flowers or a plain old fruit basket. They come in all different sizes and there's a wide variety. Smaller and simpler is the best for a first date. Edible Arrangements typically has holiday arrangements. You can check out the site, browse their selection and order online. This is a great gift to send either earlier in the day before your date or the following day. This is also a great way to impress parents if your date still lives at home.

Recommended Bouquets for Valentines Day:
- Sweetheart Swizzle Bouquet
- Forever Fruit
- Cupid's Bouquet
- Cupid's Surprise

Gift Idea #6: Books

Books are great gifts to give, especially if she's a bookworm like me. Picking out a book will require you to have a basic idea of her likes. Make sure the book is small enough so it can be easily slipped into a purse or pocket-book while on your date. This is a great gift to show her that you are not merely interested in her physical features, but her intellectual side as well. Books can help establish stimulating conversations. Just avoid anything too political or controversial (unless that's what she enjoys reading).

Great Romance Books
- Gone with the Wind
- Twilight
- A Walk to Remember
- Valentine Princess

Gift Idea #7: Jewelry

Jewelry is another traditional V-Day gift, however you have to tread carefully when it comes to jewelry. Rings are a definite no-no for a first date. Also, unless you're a rich man, don't buy anything out of your budget range. Make sure your gift doesn't imply commitment yet. Family heirlooms are a bad idea for that very reason. Bracelets and the like will work and can be affordable. Steer clear of fancy gemstones and stick with things like charm bracelets or necklaces.

Jewelry Ideas
- Charm bracelets
- Necklaces
- Simple earrings

Gift Idea #8: Pay for Dinner

If all else fails, paying for dinner will score you some points. Most women like chivalry (I know I do). Holding doors, pulling out chairs and taking care of the bill are simple ways to impress your Valentine.Traditionally the man pays for dinner on the first date, however there are some women who feel this is outdated. You should at least offer to pay. If she says "no that's all right", you can insist a bit. However, if she insists that she wants to at least pay her half of the check, don't argue. She might very well be trying to impress you.
