WHEN...WHERE...WHY WAS I BORN?

No Record of Birth

I have written several hubs concerning the needs of an orphanage in Kenya, The Rahab Centre for Orphaned Children. My purpose for writing these hubs is to bring awareness to their situation.

In developed countries, everyone has a record of their date of birth, or at least access to it. This is not always the case; however, in underdeveloped countries.

In considering how nice it would be to send a gift to an orphan in Kenya on their birthday, I became aware that it is not that simple. Perhaps they don't know when they were born.

Not all the orphans in The Rahab Centre for Orphaned Children know the date they were born. Some were found abandoned on the streets of Mombasa with no knowledge of who left them or why.

The number of orphans in Kenya is staggering and continues to rise. Hunger, Malaria and Aids takes the lives of parents every day. After the 2nd parent dies, It is common for a group of children to be left alone in huts to fend for themselves. The kindhearted who are able will try to get these children to a city where the hopes are that they will be taken in by someone who can provide for them.

This is the case of several who have been rescued from the streets by Josphat and his wife in Mombasa. These children have no knowledge of when they were born and might never be able to find out. For many, the relatives have also died or are unknown.

Birthdays are important to children. It's the time of year when they look forward to exclusive attention on their special day.

I don't know how these children cope with the fact that they have no parents, no relatives and nearly no knowledge of their history. Added to that is the poverty and loneliness an orphan must deal with in this situation.

Perhaps we will let them choose the date of their birth, somehow making it official, with birthday parties enjoyed every year for the rest of their lives. I share the Lord's sentiments written in Jeremiah 29:11:

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Thanks Drtruthman for your comments also. Yes, it is a universal problem. I'm so thankful for the Internet and the ability to enjoy our territory being increased.

A very beautiful (though sad)and interesting article. As a minister having worked with missionaries for years, I am aware of this problem and it is sad. Part of our illegal immigration problem in Texas comes from a similar situation. Many Mexican nationals would come legally IF they could prove their birth but unfortunately they can't even prove their birth in Mexico resulting in their inability to secure a work visa. It's a very sad problem on a GLOBAL level. Thanks for writing this. I voted UP, useful, interesting, beautiful and awesome. Great job.

So much suffering and sadness....it is heartwrenching. When we are made aware of the realities which exist in many places of this huge world, it is often beyond imagination. The pain, sickness & death of children is an especially egregious reality. I feel anger, as well as sadness that so little is ever done in these areas to make a profound difference...and I will never understand it. Up & awesome
