A few fun facts about carols

  • Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was made famous by Judy Garland in 1944. Because she hated the end of the original first line, "Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last", the lyrics were changed to, "Let your heart be light." The version she sang also contains the line “but ‘till then we’ll have to muddle through some how,” in all later versions of the song was changed to “Hang a shining star upon the highest bough”.
  • Bruce Springsteen recorded Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Merry Christmas Baby.
  • Towards the end of the middle ages, Carols were being sung in Churches.
  • Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday, in 1836. In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge started the tradition of lighting a national Christmas tree on the White House lawn.
  • The song “What Child is This” is sung to the tune of “Greensleeves”. It was mentioned in “the merry wives of Windsor” two times by Shakespeare
  • If you were to receive all of the gifts in the song "The 12 Days of Christmas," you’d have 364 gifts.
  • Silent Night is perhaps the best know carol in the world. The soldiers sang it together across No Man’s Land during World War 1. The soldiers laid down their guns as they sang it.
  • The first carols were Pagan songs for the Winter Solstice Celebration.
  • We Wish You a Merry Christmas dates back to the 1500's, first sung, in Merry Olde England. Singers accompanied rich merchants on strolls and serenaded the town on wintry nights. They were paid with a few coins or treats including figgy pudding, a pastry covered blend of figs, nuts, and spices.
