Christmas Decorations on a Budget

A lovely wreath to welcome guests~~Made by my daughter several years ago, it is still beautiful and hangs on my front door again this year.

For many, summertime is the time to purchase materials to use to make decorations and even gifts for Christmas and other holidays later in the year.

Feel the Spirit, as you read and make decisions about what you will include in your décor this year.

Cute little snowman

Source

No need to break the bank, to stress, to be unhappy at holiday time when it comes to decorating your home. It takes only a little imagination and creativity to create decorations that will bring a little cheer to your home.

In this article two Christmas wreaths and one Thanksgiving wreath is shown. There is also a happy little snowman decoration and a Santa napkin holder. The idea for the little snowman was one my daughter found on Pinterest.

Another way to save is to purchase gently used tablecloths and cloth napkins. They can be laundered carefully and they are ready to use.

. I have found that some of the cutest and most memorable decorations are the simple ones. You may wish to give these a try this year.

A felt Santa napkin holder/fun for kids to make

Santa napkin holder (Can be turned in an Easter Bunny napkin holder simply)

To make the Santa napkin holder:

  • You need red, pink white felt
  • small pom poms
  • googly eyes
  • glue
  • scissors

Make a pattern using steps shown. Cut out. Glue. Let dry.

Cute and fun for a holiday dinner or breakfast on Christmas morning

Excellent Little DIY Ideas

Where to get free or almost free ornaments/ribbons/lace

  • Yard sales
  • Relatives
  • Your attic
  • Your containers in which ornaments are stored
  • Church rummage sales
  • Discount tables in many stores

A good time to stock up if you want new items is after Christmas when items are marked down to 75% and 90% off.

Another beautiful wreath my daughter made/ready to be stored away

Create a wreath

To create a wreath you need:

  • a wire form for a wreath/straw form for a wreath
  • lace
  • glass balls
  • decorations or ornaments
  • faux pine garland/real pine garlands can be used too (they smell so good)

Assemble the parts of the wreath as you please.

This is not really too time consuming. These three wreaths were put together in 2 hours.

About the wreaths in the photographs:

These wreaths are mounted on metal wreath forms that were in the free bin at the church yard sale. All other items were ten cents apiece at the same church yard sale. The grand total that my daughter spent on them was about $3.50. If you have priced wreaths especially of this size, they begin at about $59.00.

A Second Christmas wreath

Source

Storage of wreaths

Storing wreaths safely can mean that you can use them again and again.

To store:nd through the loop that is used to hang the wreath on the wreath holder on your door.

2. Tie ribbon or cord in a secure knot and hang over a clothes hanger.

3. Cover the wreathe with a large black trash bag or two smaller bags connected together it you have no black ones. I invert the bag so the open end is at the bottom so dust does not come in to spoil the wreath. I make a tiny hole in the bottom of the bag and slip it over the crook of the clothes hanger.

4. Voila!! Protected wreath....You can use the following year or several years later.

The little snowman

To make a snowman you need:

  • a little clay pot
  • a sock that an infant has outgrown
  • a pom pom
  • paint
  • paint brush

You can put your own personality into these little decorations as well. You could make a family of elves, a Santa or Mrs. Claus, A Rudolph, a team of reindeer. You can have lots of fun with these crafts. These are simple enough for children to do. Happy decorating.

Thank you Peggy. I will be putting up the Christmas wreath next weekend as I am having a party that weekend. I have already begun to put out Christmas decor as it is a favorite time for my family and for me.

I appreciate the share too....

Hoping all is well with you and yours as always...many Angels are headed your way ps

People are already starting to decorate for Christmas in our subdivision. A house behind us already has their Christmas tree up and lit. They do that every year prior to Thanksgiving. Another family across the street is having a Christmas party for their church members at their home on Dec. 3rd so they are also in high gear getting ready for that date.

This is a perfect time to once again share this hub of yours. It may give people ideas of what they can make with a more limited budget but still have very pretty items for this time of year for decorating or gift giving.

Sending prayers your way for a blessed Christmas!

I love arts and crafts projects. We use to make so many Christmas decorations and gifts when the kids were still at home. It was a lot of fun, and I still have decorations that they made for me, I love them. There is so much we can create with a good imagination. - Kudos!

thanks, Peggy, for stopping...

It is hard with tight budgets to have extra funds for decor but with a little imagination we can glam up our living space if desired.

Hoping to see ideas others have found that work as well.

Hi Patricia,

Nice time of year to remind people that they do not have to break the bank to make or give seasonal gifts. Sometimes gifts of time can be even more meaningful than things as I know you know. Just saw your comment made 5 weeks ago about passing through Houston. For some reason it ended up labeled as spam and I just discovered it. Hopefully the next time...we will be able to meet. Enjoy the rest of this month and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

You know, truth be told, even when I was not on a fixed budget, and could pretty much go buy whatever, I still liked to find things I like, put them together in a lovely way, or let my daughter do it for me.

Free or inexpensive does not have to mean tacky.

Thank you for visiting. Angels are on the way to you today ps

It is true...at least for our family..a big part of the fun of this time of the year is making crafts and decorations together as a family.

It is especially fun to see the little grandson having so much fun with us.

Angels are on the way this year. ps

These are lovely! We have been making tree ornaments from pine cones, and little elves and fairies from pipe cleaners, felt, and beads this year. It is such fun to make your own, and when you get them out the following year, you bring back the great memories of making them.

Thank you so much for sharing. The little Santa stays out all year long.

The wreath I am using for about the fifth year and it is still as lovely as ever. I am not doing a lot of new things this year as far as decorating is concerned I am doing a lot of special treats for my family that we have not done in a long while though.

Have a lovely Christmas, Shyron.

Angels are on the way to you. ps

These are so pretty and perfect for people to make for this upcoming season of the year. There is still time to make these wreaths and decorations and not only would they be nice for one's own home but would make terrific gift ideas as well.

So happy to hear that your grandson is finished with chemo for now. Will say some prayers for him and his mother. Sending angels your way! Sharing this!

You are so right, Rebecca.

Lovely or cute does not have to mean expensive. The jingle bell wreath hung on my daughter's door. I know she will have another different one this year. I may get her to let me hang it on my fence.

So nice to see you this morning have a lovely day...Angels are wining their way to you ps

Good morning sgbrown

I know. I would have had to take a second mortgage on my house to pay for wreaths this year. So glad that my daughter knows how to work magic with lace and ornaments. I will be looking shortly after Christmas when people start putting out ornaments and such to sell.

Thanks for the vote... :)

Great ideas! Your wreaths are simply beautiful! I priced some wreaths this year and was amazed at the cost. I will be looking for some decorating materials during the after Christmas sales and garage sales for making some of these beautiful wreaths for next year. Voting this us and more... :)

Good evening, Alocsin....

I have my daughter to thank for that wreath. She recycles everything. It is actually hanging on her entry way door as we are having a big Thanksgiving Do at her house Thanksgiving Day.

Hi Shining

Thank you. You are so sweet. My daughter made the wreaths..she is so clever and I think it is a kind of therapy for her.

The other day my grandson came to visit and she brought my wreath. I hung it in my kitchen as I am not putting it on the door till Thanksgiving Day. He kept bringing me to the kitchen and saying, Christmas, Christmas...boootifull...Out of the mouths of babes.

Glad to see you today...I am trying to stay warm, wimp that I am. It is cool here today. About 59 and after 80+ that is cool. :) When I lived in South Dakota 32 was a heat wave...it is all so relative, isn't it? have a lovely afternoon..Sending Angels your way... :) ps

Mh...You ares o funny. Never used ornaments would be fabulous. For your wreath, you could print your limericks and poems on tiny paper, insert them in clear glass ornaments, and hang them on the werath. When the season is over, give one to each of your friends and family ...:)

Your sense of humor keeps me smiling. ps

Hi Billy

Frugal is such a diplomatic word....Cheap is the term I use for me. I give new defini

tion to the term C H E A P. I call others frugal...me I call the other word..

Long ago when I was a little girl we used whatever was available to decorate our tree and home with. We had little money to buy such things but our home was merry and filled with all of the joy of the season. I guess that is where I learned to look for bargains. Yes, this teacher is still always looking for ideas to share.

Happy middle of the night to you...ps

Very nice PS! If it smells like frugal and looks like frugal it must be frugal! :)

This looks like it was written by a teacher; I wonder why? I remember making a couple of these in my classes in Decembers gone by.

Great suggestions my friend!
