Christmas Gift for a Music Lover? Best Acapella CD Albums for Christmas

Christmas music is playing everywhere! Just walk into any shop, any mall, post office, restaurant... you'd probably hear Christmas carols and Christmas songs blaring through the speakers.

Music is indeed something so powerful - the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour was announced by Angels singing on high - no festive season and celebration would be complete without music indeed. In this hub, I have chosen to review several of my favorite Acapella Christmas music CDs. If you need some music to remind yourself of the blessings of Christmas, or to liven up a Christmas gathering, or to give a gift to someone, I hope you will find something useful in this hub!

The King Singers

King Singers Singing Jason Mraz's I'm Yours

1. The King Singers

The King Singers are a group of Acapella men who I have grown up listening to. These are incredibly talented singers - who sing traditional repertoire, classical pieces, jazz standards, pop songs... all using their voices.

I remember as a kid I used to watch them in concert and wish that I were part of an acapella group. In fact, my dream to belong to a professional acapella group is owed to the King Singers, and the Swingle Singers. I totally adore these singers who have such beautiful voices.

The King Singers sing an entire range of notes and you must be wondering how they hit such high notes - well, the counter tenors (those who sing notes that the ladies can hit) use their falsetto. The King Singers have counter tenors that have extremely nice tones, which I always love to listen to.

Sometimes the The King Singers also collaborate with other instrumentalists, or orchestras when they sing. It is always a blessing to listen to such beautiful voices.

On the right, you will find the King Singer's Christmas Albums, if you click on it, it will take you to other Christmas Albums on Amazon. Some of the King Singer's Christmas albums contain more traditional carols, like Quem Pastores, while others contain more contemporary Christmas Songs.

Clicking on the link also allows you to hear a short sampling of the different songs on the album. It gives you a good taste on what to expect. I personally recommend The King Singers as excellent background music for an intimate Christmas get together, or as a gift for someone who enjoys profound and quiet music.

If you are into male acapella groups, the King Singers is undisputedly one of the best around.

Swingle Singers doing a Contemporary Arrangement of Last Christmas

Absolutely Beautiful Swingle Christmas Harmonies

2. The Swingle Singers

The Swingle Singers are another of my favorite acapella groups that I grew up listening to all the time - in the car, at home...and when I walked round I'd have their music playing in my head.

The Swingle Singers are another classic acapella group that is internationally acclaimed with their exquisite arrangements. In this group, there are 2 sopranos, 2 altos, 2 tenors and 2 basses. It is amazing what they do with their voices. I have always enjoyed and been fascinated with those do who the vocal percussion parts, and those who imitate instruments like the trumpets, guitars... it is always amazing to watch them in concert, as their have cool choreography to accompany their amazing voices.

Like the King Singers, the Swingle Singers also have really varied repertoire, which is always ear delicious.

If you are a fan of light (NOT operatic) female voices, and gorgeous harmonies, the Swingle Singers are a treat that you will really enjoy.

This first CD has more traditional arrangements of Christmas Carols, such as We Three Kings, and O Come O Come Emmanuel. Toward the end, they also have contemporary songs such as White Christmas and Jingle Bells. It is a lovely choice of songs, and it feels little lighter than King Singers, due to the crystal and bell like voices of the sopranos.

The second CD has a less traditional playlist, and it has songs like Joni Mitchel's River inside. If you click the CD, there is an option that allows you to listen to a sample of each song. It's worth checking out. I remember watching the Swingle Singers doing these songs live one concert, and till today I still remember the beauty of their voices.

Manhatten Transfer's Christmas Time is Here

3. Manhatten Transfer

Manhatten Transfer is a really popular acapella group. Although I did not grow up listening to their songs in concert, I have always enjoyed watching them on youtube. This group was fromed in 1972, with 4 members.

They are most famous for their jazz harmonies, and their album on Amazon has received many positive reviews. Their sound sounds very similar to the Swingle Singers, so any acapella fan will definitely enjoy their music!

Just like the other CDs, clicking on the Amazon capsule will take you to a page where you can hear a sample of all the songs on the album. Enjoy!

Straight No Chaser's Christmas Album

4. Straight No Chaser

This group has made enormous waves on youtube. They are probably the coolest group of young acapella singers. Straight No Chaser's 12 days of Christmas has garnered over 13 million hits on youtube for their refreshingly wacky take on the 12 Days of Christmas traditional. The video is below, and I do hope that you've made it far enough through this hub to watch it.

Straight No Chaser's Christmas album has a really great mix of songs. Their sound is more like a younger version of the King Singers, and they are such a delight to listen to.

Once again, clicking on the CD will take you to Amazon's page where you get the chance to listen to some of their songs.

Acapella music is beautiful. You chose some great songs for your Hub. I enjoyed them very much. This year, as last Christmas, I am not spending any money retail though. Everything is handmade, an original photograph or from thrift and consignment stores. Otherwise I would buy these. I love them! Thanks for a great listen.
