Christmas: Is Jesus The Real Reason For The Season?
What's The real reason for the season?
Is Jesus the real reason for the season? That’s a good question. Christians gladly take the answer to that question for granted, and confidently and unquestionably say yes “He’s the reason for the season”. It’s catchy, has a nice beat, and you can dance to it. But as melodious and catchy, as it may be…is it true?
When I was a kid; It didn't strike me as strange, that Jesus and Santa Claus were both part of Christmas. But as I got older, I started to wonder, what one had to do with the other. So over the course of many, many years, I studied the history of how Christmas became Christmas, and what Santa Claus and the Christmas tree, have to do with Christmas. This is some of what I found
The Winter Solstice
The Winter Solstice
In ancient times, many cultures, celebrated the Winter Solstice (Solstice means the sun stands still), as the rebirth of the sun (the sun god). That had gotten weaker and weaker, as the days of light got shorter and the darkness of night, got longer. The sun was seen to get stronger and more mature in summer, when the days of light were longer, then slowly growing weaker and more feeble as time went on until, its death in the heart of winter, around Dec 21, when the darkness of night seemed just as long as days of light. But, during that same time, the Sun was seen as being reborn, as the days of light got longer, and longer and the darkness of night got shorter and shorter, until in Spring, at the celebration of the, Goddess Eostore (Easter), when the Sunlight was seen as being fully returned from the dead. The was called the Vernal Equinox.
Christmas means Christ Mass, a religious ceremony instituted by the early Roman
Catholic Church, to celebrate the birth of their newfound god man, Jesus, whom they view as the Christ or the messiah.
Way back in, the 4th century AD, when Roman Catholic Christianity, was created by the Roman Emperor, Constantine the great, and newly converted, Greco-Roman priests. December 25 had been celebrated for thousands of years, as the Winter Solstice, the annual beginning of the rebirth of the Sun God. Constantine worshipped, Sol Invictus (the invincible sun, sun god) and December 25 was the god’s birthday. So obviously Jesus, their new found god man’s birth, had to coincide with a day that had been celebrated for thousands of years, if they wanted anyone to take note of it, or take it seriously. Jesus’ birthday is on Dec 25th because; obviously he was seen as a sun god. That’s why the Christian holy day is, Sunday (the sun’s day) the day dedicated and scared to the sun god.
Let’s take a look at other Gods who were born on December 25
The Egyptian God Horus’, birthday was celebrated on December 25, as a newborn infant, symbolizing the first stage in the rebirth of the Sun (the sun god). During the, Spring Equinox, he was said to be a youth. During the, Summer Solstice, he entered adulthood. During, the Autumn Equinox, he entered old age. He slowly, expires, until he’s reborn again at the Winter Solstice, on December 25, and cycle begins again. In addition to being born on, Jesus’ birthday, thousands of years, before there was a Jesus. Horus was also, born of a Virgin, his mother, the Goddess Isis.
“Whatever we make of the original myth…Isis seems to have been originally a virgin (or, perhaps, sexless) goddess, and in the later period of Egyptian religion she was again considered a virgin goddess, demanding very strict abstinence from her devotees. It is at this period, apparently, that the birthday of Horus was annually celebrated, about December 25th, in the temples. As both Macrobius and the Christian writer [of the "Paschal Chronicle"] say, a figure of Horus as a baby was laid in a manger, in a scenic reconstruction of a stable, and a statue of Isis was placed beside it. Horus was, in a sense, the Savior of mankind. He was their avenger against the powers of darkness; he was the light of the world. His birth-festival was a real Christmas before Christ.” (The Story of Religious Controversy, Joseph McCabe), (Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled Acharya S/D.M. Murdock )
Mithra the Greco-Roman-Persian-East Indian god was born on December 25
. "Both Mithras and Christ were described variously as 'the Way,' 'the Truth,' 'the Light,' 'the Life,' 'the Word,' 'the Son of God,' 'the Good Shepherd.' The Christian litany to Jesus could easily be an allegorical litany to the sun-god. Mithras is often represented as carrying a lamb on his shoulders, just as Jesus is. Midnight services were found in both religions. The virgin mother...was easily merged with the virgin mother Mary. Petra, the sacred rock of Mithraism, became Peter, the foundation of the Christian Church." (Gerald Berry, Religions of the World) (Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled Acharya S/
D.M. Murdock )
So that’s one more sun god born or celebrated before Jesus’ time, and in the same manner that Jesus was later celebrated. Very interesting!
The worship of Mithra was widespread in ancient India
"Mithra or Mitra is...worshipped as Itu (Mitra-Mitu-Itu) in every house of the Hindus in India. Itu (derivative of Mitu or Mitra) is considered as the Vegetation-deity. This Mithra or Mitra (Sun-God) is believed to be a Mediator between God and man, between the Sky and the Earth. It is said that Mithra or [the] Sun took birth in the Cave on December 25th. It is also the belief of the Christian world that Mithra or the Sun-God was born of [a] Virgin. He travelled far and wide. He has twelve satellites, which are taken as the Sun's disciples.... [The Sun's] great festivals are observed in the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox—Christmas and Easter. His symbol is the Lamb...." Adonis the Greco-Syrian sun god was born on December 25th. He arose from death after descending into the underworld for three days, after being crucified on a tree. He arose on Sunday, as the solar deity ( the new sun) for the beginning of a new season. He was identified with the Hebrew, Adonai.
200 BC. The Roman god Attis, the son of the virgin, Nana, birthday was celebrated on Dec. 25th. He was crucified on a tree, spent three days in the underworld, then rose from the dead on Sunday. Sound familiar?
1st Century BCE, the Greek god Dionysus’ birthday was celebrated on Dec. 25th. He was worshipped in Jerusalem and much of the Middle East. Dionysus was the son of Zeus, the Father God, as was proclaimed about Jesus.
2-3000 BC. The Egyptian god, Osiris, was worshiped as a savior-god and his birthday was celebrated on December 25. Three wise men attended his birth. He was referred to as “the resurrection and the Life, as the Good shepherd” and had the power to help people become reborn. Doesn't sound familiar too?
Mithra Killing The Cosmic Bull
Mithra the main competitor of Jesus
500 BCE. And the aforementioned, Mithra, was the main competitor to the worship of Jesus in the Roman Empire. Mithra was worshipped throughout the Rome, especially among the Roman soldiers. He was born on December 25, during the celebration of “Dies Natalis Solic Invite,” The “Birthday of Sol Invitus the Unconquered Sun with whom he was identified.
Why Jesus' birthday is December 25
It seems pretty obvious that Jesus’ birthday was made to occur on, December 25, during the winter solstice, because the sun god, Sol Invictus, was born on that day, and, had been celebrated during that time, for thousands of years before the birth or creation of Jesus, as the Christian sun god. When Christianity was formed, the day of Jesus’ birth wasn’t known. It was placed on various days, in various months, before December 25 was finally chosen as the day of his supposed birth.
“The DePascha Computus, an anonymous document believed to have been written in North Africa around 243 CE, placed Jesus birth on March 28. Clement, a bishop of Alexandria (d. ca. 215 CE), thought Jesus was born on November 18. Based on historical records, Fitzmyer guesses that Jesus birth occurred on September 11, 3 BCE” (Simple To Remember.com http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/Christmas_TheRealStory.htm).
One would think, that, an event that was supposed to be of such profound importance for the world and humankind, that the date of that event would be known for certain? But, obviously, that’s not the case. This is just more evidence that, Jesus, wasn’t born on Christmas day, if he was born at all. His supposed birthday was based on a miscalculation,
“Joseph A. Fitzmyer – Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at the Catholic University of America, member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and former president of the Catholic Biblical Association – writing in the Catholic Church’s official commentary on the New Testament, writes about the date of Jesus’ birth, “Though the year [of Jesus birth is not reckoned with certainty, the birth did not occur in AD 1. The Christian era, supposed to have its starting point in the year of Jesus birth, is based on a miscalculation introduced ca. 533 by Dionysius Exiguus.”
I think that gives us a good idea of why Jesus birthday is on December 25 don’t you?
Now let’s look at how Santa, presents and Christmas trees became associated with Christmas.
Santa Claus was based on a historical person: Nicholas the Bishop of Myra, Turkey, 270 CE who supposedly gave gifts to the poor. Nicholas was born in Parara, Turkey and later became Bishop of Myra. He died in 345 CE on December 6th. He was only named a saint in the 19th century.
1809. the novelist Washington Irving publishes, “Knickerbocker History”. One of the characters in work is Saint Nicholas, with a white beard riding a flying-horse. Nicholas was referred to as, Santa Claus. Now we know why Santa is called “Ole Saint Nick!”
1822. Dr. Clement Moore published “Twas the night before Christmas,” Instead of Santa riding a flying horse. Moore had Santa riding in a sleigh powered by flying reindeer.
1862-86. Thomas Nast drew more than 2000 cartoons of Santa for Harper’s Weekly. Nast had Santa living at the North Pole, with his family of worker elves, as well as having Santa keeping a list of the naughty or nice boys and girls. Now you know how those things became associated with Christmas.
1931. Swedish commercial artist, Haddon Sundblom, was commissioned by the Coca Cola Company to create a coke-drinking Santa. Sundblom used his friend, Lou Prentice, as the model for the cheerful, chubby faced Santa, we all know and love. Coca Cola insisted that, Santa’s fur-trimmed suit be bright, Coca Cola red. Now you know why Santa looks the way he does.
The Christmas Tree
What does the Christmas tree have to with Christmas? So-called pagan cultures that lived in the forests had worshiped trees for hundreds of years before Christmas was created. The trees were brought into their homes and decorated with various objects, in celebration of the winter solstice. The early Roman Catholic church allowed this practice to continue, to make it easier to convert, so-called pagans to their new religion
Why are presents given at Christmas? How did that tradition start?
The Emperors of pre-Christian Rome, had a practice of requiring the dregs of their society, to bring offerings and gifts to them at the celebration of the Saturnalia, during winter solstice. Eventually, this ritual spread among the general populace. The Catholic Church adopted this ritual and associated with the legend of gift-giving of, Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus).
Back to our original question
Now back to our original question; is Jesus the real reason for the season?
I would say, that there appears to be other reasons for the season, rather than Jesus.
