Christmas Sangria

Christmas Sangria

Sangria is a wine punch native to latin countries. And for those who live in warm climates during the Holidays why not have a special Christmas Sangria. There are advantages to serving Sangria for your Holiday festivities.

First I have never actually seen anyone get intoxicated on Sangria. And for those who aren't drinkers this is a very pleasant experience having a sober Christmas.

Second, you use inexpensive wine to make Sangria. Save the good stuff for yourself.

Third, because no one gets intoxicated people leave the party at a reasonable hour.

Fourth, you prepare it the night before and you only make enough for people to have a couple of glasses although honestly I have never witnessed anyone who has gotten intoxicated on Sangria.

And finally no intoxicated people at the Christmas table means no fighting which means you can have peace for atleats one Christmas night.

Now I have included a link for you to look up how to make Sangria and then I am going to gve you my own special brew. No one gets intoxicated on my stuff but then again I woudn't serve it to minors.

Why doesn't anyone get intoxiated?

I think the sugars in the wine and the sugars in the fruit mix and dilute the alcohol. Also I have noticed no one eats the fruit in the Sangria. So perhaps the fruit absorbs the wine and that is why no one gets intoxicated. It doesn't really matter as long as you have peace during your Christmas feast.

So here is the link to the traditional Sangria and then I wil provide you with my home brew.

My Home Brew of Sangria

2- bottles of cheap red wine not sweet.

2 lemons

2 oranges

2 limes

3/4 cup strawberries

3/4 cups raspberries

1 large can of diced pineapple

4 slice apples

40 red seedless grapes cut in half.

1/2 a honey dew melon (Make melon balls)

Preparations

I pour both bottles of wine into a large clay pitcher.

I squeeze the lemon, orange and lime juice in juice. I usually cut up a few extra orange slice pulp in.

I peel and slice the apples and add them in.

And then I add the pineapple, melon and grapes ( You can add more grapes if you have the room.)

Store in the refrigerator over night. For some reason I put easy wrap over my pitcher but do as you wish.

Before serving:

Add strawberries and raspberries.

Optional

Before serving add about 4 cups of ginger ale

I have also been know to add pears to this drink as well.

Sangria Sangria

I found this recipe on youtube...it might make you a little intoxicated but if that is okay, try it out. It has a very unique taste.

Sangria Sangria Recipe

In Conlusion

This will be a really terrific treat to serve at your Christmas table and your guests will be very pleased. It is thoughtful and takes time and will minimize the effects alcohol plays on your peaceful holidays while still serving wine.

No one wants to admit the role alcohol plays in family disputes during the holidays. I certain never wanted to. So i had to find creative ways to minimize the effects of alcohol on my family's holiday and the easiest way to do that was to serve my favorite Christmas Sangria which in the end was a present to my family and most of all myself.

Happy Holidays.

Thanks for reading and commenting Victoria Lynn. This drink is very popular in the South for the Holidays. One note. Some people slice the orange, lemon and lime but I do not as I worry about pesticides on the skins of those fruits. But some people think that is silly. So please decide for yourself.

Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks Brian,

I guess we now know that it isn't the fruit that soaks up the alcohol. It is an interesting and perplexing question to research as to why Sangria never makes anyone intoxicated. I guess that can be the subject of another hub.

Thanks again for reading and commenting Brian.

Hi JT,

Very prolific writing on your side my friend. Hopefully we will try those drinks and cyder. On this side we don't drink alcohol, so we should be fine. I think it would make a good spirit on a flight..around 12 midnite, right?

Hi Lord,

I don't drink because of my son. With a child with Autism you always need our wits about you. But yes, if you are so inclined to try the Sangria I can vouch I have never been intoxicated by it and I driink hardly at all. I think the last drink I had was 1 glass of wine three or four years ago. But when I did serve Christmas dinner and there was the inevitable perosn who would partake a little bit too much I would serve Sangria and no one became intoxicated. So I think you are safe. I am making a batch of the cider this weekend for my son.

All My Best and Happy December.

Hi homesteadbound,

It is wonderful and the best part is no one gets tipsy!! Let me know how it turns out for you but I warn you don't drink it when it is too hot in Texas as it can have a stronger effect on you in temperatures over a 100 degress.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

That is interesting that it has more of an impact on you when the temps are up? Why do you think that is?

Hi homesteadbound,

Biochemically your body burns more energy to maintain it's temperature in warmer weather and therefore your cells need more fuel. Sugar AKA alcohol is rapidly absorbed into the blood stream and is metabolized faster in warmer weather and has a more drastic effect.

Ever drink in a hot tub? It has the exact same effect and it a very dangerous thing to do.

I only mentioned this because you are in Texas and it gets mighty hot!!

Sorry I know biochemistry is really a boring answer.

Thanks for asking and have a nice evening!!
