Coffee Mug Gift Basket for Teenage Girls

Putting together gift baskets is a great way to personalize a gift while also keeping it simple and affordable. I recently put together a gift basket using a colourful mug and filling it with small items that most teenage girls will enjoy (I made this gift for my teenage niece). This kind of gift is great to give because you can customize every last detail in order to appeal to each person's liking.

Here is what you'll need:

  • a mug, preferably with a colourful design
  • a matching coaster
  • transparent plastic gift wrap (with a design printed on it if you want to partially conceal the contents of the mug)
  • ribbon
  • tissue paper
  • scissors (to cut the tissue paper and plastic gift wrap)
  • small items to fill the mug with (items will vary depending on the person)
  • one larger item that will sit inside the mug, allowing you to create an arrangement of smaller items on top (examples include: a small candle, a small bar of soap, a small jar of hand cream)

First, take a piece of tissue paper (about a quarter of a full sheet is enough) and press it into the mug so that it lines the inside, but also hangs off the edge of the mug. Then place the larger item into the mug so that the small items can sit on top. Of course, you can fill the entire mug with small items, but putting a larger one inside first allows you to have a flat surface with which to create a display of smaller items so that the majority of the items can be seen all at once.

Arrangement

Once the larger item is in the bottom of the mug, start arranging the smaller items on top. In this example, I put in items that are part of a desserts theme.

After you have arranged the items to your liking, make sure that they are secure enough on top by sticking in small candy canes or other narrow objects (such as pencils, pens, brushes, nail files) into the small spaces.

Next, unroll some of the transparent plastic wrap and measure how much of it you’ll need by placing the coaster somewhere in the middle, and then placing the mug on top. Take the edge of the plastic wrap and lift it up to the side of the mug. You want the plastic wrap to be about 3-4 inches taller than the top-most point of the gift. Do the same to the other two edges and cut the plastic wrap on the last side.

Position the mug and coaster so that it’s in the middle of the measured piece of plastic wrap and bring the corners of it to the top so that they all meet. Cinch the corners just above the top-most point of your gift and secure it with a small piece of ribbon. Then add a longer piece and make a bow and curl the ends. You could also use a thick piece of ribbon and make a bow with it instead.

As the plastic gathers at the top, the print on the plastic conceals the contents of the mug, but the bottom remains clear enough that mug and coaster are visible.

What I Used

The contents of this mug are:

  • Candy Canes
  • Miniature bottles of nail polish (5)
  • 1 tube of lip gloss
  • 3 dessert-shaped erasers
  • a small pack of Gingerbread scented body wash in a Gingerbread man-shaped packaged
  • a small candle
  • a nail file

Other Themes

I went with a 'dessert' theme mixed with beauty-related items. Here are some other theme ideas:

  • Candy (you could fill the mug entirely with different types of candy and include other candy-related items)
  • Cute Animals
  • School/Office Supplies
  • Art Supplies

If you're having a hard time finding small items, try finding a bigger coffee mug that could hold larger items that you'd like to include. You could also use a soup bowl or other container that can also be used later on for other purposes.

Get creative with this unique type of gift basket and add anything you think they'll like!

First I just wanted to say that I love your blog! It's great (and hard) to find someone who has advice on make up products from Canada. I've been wanting to comment on your blog for a while, but haven't been able to since it required me to provide a profile which I didn't have.

Anyway, keep up the great work!
