Father’s Day is a great time to show Dad just how much you care, but picking out the right card can often be a challenge. While there are plenty of sweet and sentimental Mother’s Day cards, the selection for Father’s Day tends to be a bit more limited.

If you’re going to shop for a Father’s Day card at a discount store, remember that the best Father’s Day card is one that fits Dad’s personality. Don’t give Dad a card with golf balls on the front if he’s never played the game. On a similar note, a card with a picture of a father wearing a suit and tie isn’t a good choice for the man who lives in blue jeans and a t-shirt.

You may think handmade cards are for little kids, but taking the time to create something unique for your Dad is a good way to show how much you care. You can design a cool Father’s Day card using just a few scraps of patterned paper, clip art, and embellishments like buttons or ribbon. The Internet is full of sites offering great handmade card ideas or you can search for inspiration by combining elements of two or three different pre-made cards to create your own unique design.

Most online photo developers also offer the chance to make personalized greeting cards. Pair a picture of Dad with a funny joke or a favorite quote to make a cool Father’s Day card. If you’re feeling creative, use the image editing filters in a program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements to give your picture the look of an Andy Warhol painting.

Regardless of whether you choose to buy or make a Father’s Day card, don’t forget to add a special handwritten message. In a world where so much of our communication occurs online, handwritten notes are considered something to be cherished long after the holiday has passed.
