Countdown to Christmas Calendar

Updated on March 23, 2013

When do you start counting down the days until Christmas?

As a child, we seem to start that process pretty early since we're anticipating Santa's arrival and a bag full of new toys. Sometimes school-age kids incorporate the number of days until school's out into that equation.

The weeks leading up to the Christmas holidays was always filled with fun Christmas projects. We would make trees and ornaments and color pictures of reindeer, angels and wreaths. Then it would all lead up to the big Christmas party where the room mothers brought in cupcakes and candy. Those days are gone. It's no longer acceptable for sugar to enter the classrooms here. The few room mothers that don't work outside the home now bring in raisins, peanut butter on celery, and pretzels if they even bring in food at all.

As an adult, we seem to start counting the paydays until Christmas so that we can budget accordingly. It's almost a race against the clock to make sure we get everything done in a timely and efficient manner. Being organized helps tremendously on the stress factor.

What do you use to count down the days?

Christmas Countdown Calendars

There are lots of cute Christmas Countdown Calendars. You are sure to find one that you'll love.

I have several that I have had for years. One is a cute plush snowman that sits holding a wooden box that holds two wooden blocks. Each day you turn the blocks around to reflect the number of days left until Christmas. Having two blocks means you are limited to counting down from 99 days.

The other one that I have is a wooden stocking that hangs on the wall that has two hooks that hold wooden squares that have the numbers on them. This one is a bit more difficult to change out because you sometimes have to take squares off to get to the one you want and the hook doesn't work well with the wooden squares. Again, you are limited to 99 days.

Some incorporate a chalkboard so that you simply erase the number of days and write the new number with a piece of chalk.

Christmas Advent Calendars

Some countdown calendars incorporate the Advent. Advent calendars have been around since 1851.

Advent calendars count down the 24 days until Christmas beginning with December the 1st. Many of these calendars are geared towards children and have a small toy or piece of candy behind each of the twenty-four doors or flaps that you open each day.

I was an only child so this wasn't an issue around our house, but what do parents do that have more than one child? Do you buy multiple advent calendars or do you have the children take turns opening the doors and retrieving the prize or candy? What a pain to keep up with whose turn it is.

Christmas is Coming

No matter how you count down, or even if you ignore counting down, Christmas is definitely on its way and it'll be here before you know it.

I wish you all a very happy and safe Holiday Season!
