Easter Fun at Your Office: I've Been Hopped!

Source

Be a Bunny Buddy

Some of you may already be familiar with an activity called "elfing" or "jingling" that has become popular in many offices during the holiday season. At my office, we decided to add a new holiday game and it has been a big hit. We now "hop" co-workers at the office in the early part of Spring. I am happy to share the details with you so you can start a new tradition at your job.

We started jingling co-workers a few years ago and many employees enjoyed it. Then we discussed how we did so much during the Christmas holiday season, but nothing during the Easter holiday season. Well, that needed to change. We used the same concept to create this Easter event. If you are concerned about the political correctness of calling it an Easter activity, you can simply refer to it as a Spring activity like we do.

We have participated in this activity for a couple of years now, and it has evolved quite a bit. We now call all participants "Bunny Buddies." When we place gifts on someone's desk, it is called "hopping" that person. The concept is very simple.

The Rules of Hopping

The rules of being a Bunny Buddy is very simple. During the first week of March, someone posts a message on an employee announcement board or sends an email to all staff members asking about participation. Everyone that wants to "hop" responds back usually within about a week.

After all the names of the participants have been gathered, the names are written on small sheets of paper and put in a basket. Each person draws a name and that is the person to "hop" sometime within a specified amount of time. Since Easter is the last day in March this year, we are hopping the entire month of March.

You basically become a Bunny Buddy to someone at your office once you draw that person's name. Until you decide to hop that person, you must keep the name a secret. Once you do "hop" him or her, you reveal your name at that time. There is usually a card or a bunny sign you can place on that person's desk with a message saying, "You've been hopped by _______." It is just that easy to do!

Some offices may opt to change the rules a bit. For instance, one of my friends has an activity similar to this during the Christmas season. A "Secret Snowflake" places cute gifts on someone's desk throughout the month of December. It is not just a one-time event. At the end of December, that person leaves his or her name on the desk with the very last gift. It would be easy to do the same as a Bunny Buddy, too.

Do the Bunny Hop

The best aspects of being a Bunny Buddy is it is not expensive and it is not difficult to do. Since you usually have entire month to surprise your buddy, there is no pressure to buy everything at once or perform the surprise on a specific date. It is intended to be a low-stress activity for this very reason.

The goal of hopping someone is to brighten that person's day. You need not buy expensive gifts. No one expects gift cards or anything too pricy. Also, making a gift is certainly acceptable. For instance, baking a cake is a wonderful treat!

We did discover at our office that men are not as inclined to be a Bunny Buddy. Easter items tend to have a lot of pastel colors and bunnies are apparently "too girly," so for some strange reason, the fellows at my office just are not that interested in participating. If possible, try to make the activity seem as appealing as possible for everyone at your office, but don't be surprised if guys are not as excited to participate. This year, we have 17 Bunny Buddies... all 17 are women!

Gift Suggestions

You may be wondering what type of items are a good idea for a Bunny Hop. I can tell you, there are many pleasant Easter items and Spring related items that will appeal to just about anyone (even guys!) and it is fun to share them.

Some suggestions for a hopping great gift are:

  • Potted plants
  • Flowers
  • Easter basket
  • Easter socks
  • Stuffed animals, like bunnies, chickies, etc.
  • Baked goods like brownies or cake
  • Gardening supplies
  • Easter candy
  • Bunny ears
  • Lipgloss
  • Candles
  • Pinwheel
  • Balloons
  • Easter decorations
  • Plastic eggs filled with treats
  • Easter bucket with candy
  • Shower gels and lotion
  • Pastel stationary items
  • And much more!

Hop To It!

Now that you've gotten all the information about hopping your co-workers, what are you waiting for? It is time to hop to it and see if others are interested in participating. It is a fun way to create a friendly work atmosphere. It is also a fairly stress-free activity. You might find you want to do this event every year. Hope you enjoy it and happy Easter!

Awwww, that's a cute idea! I think a fun variation would be when doing the drawing, have the people who are signing up choose to enter either their own name to be hopped -- or the name of another person. This way, people could pass on one of those much-cherished random acts of kindness to someone else, including some of those recalcitrant guys who might not want to go out and buy pink fuzzy bunny slippers, but would love having a few morsels of Cadbury creme egg left in their in-basket!

Good hub, Jeannie! Holidays always break up the workday routine -- this sounds like a great way to build enthusiasm.

Clever idea, Jeannie. I would probably leave a large chocolate Easter bunny as a 'bunny-hopping' gift ... if I could restrain myself from first biting off its ears.

Thanks so much for your comments, everybody!

MJennifer - That is a cute idea. It can be a challenge at my job though since some people refuse to be hopped. Hehe. We have some scrooges here. Oh well. Let all the rest of us have a happy hoppy Easter. :-)

drbj - Oh yes, a giant chocolate Easter bunny is always a good gift. I love a giant chocolate ANYTHING! ;-)

peachpurple - Thanks for the vote up! I got the Hello Kitty Bunny last year when I was hopped.

Ahhh, Jeannie, it's too bad that there aren't any candy companies that make little round black licorice "bunny droppings" to do a drive-by-hopping on the springtime Scrooges at the office. Of course, if you have an ample bunny population as I do, the real ones are easy enough to come by ... Enjoy the holiday!

That is such an excellent idea! Instead of the candy lumps of coal for Christmas, someone could get a basket full of "bunny poo poo." Thanks for the idea... I might try to figure out how to achieve this with melted chocolate. Or maybe just Cocoa Puffs... it kind of looks like bunny droppings in the first place. Happy Easter!

A lot of people at my office love it... even me! I can be a bit of a scrooge at times, so it is saying a lot that I like it. Thanks for checking out my hub!

This is a wonderful way of creating good relations between people working in an office 6-8 hours per day.

Excellent ideas!

Thank you, jeannie :)

Very clever, Jeannie, but I have nobody to bunny hop but Bev....I guess we could do it in the family. Thanks for the idea and have a great weekend.

There is no reason why you shouldn't do this with Bev. It would take the surprise out of who is doing it though. :-) I've heard of people "jingling" their neighbors during the winter. You could always give "hopping" a try in your neighborhood for the spring, too. Thanks for the comment!

I heard through the "grapevine" today is your Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day.

This is such a cleaver idea. Makes me want to go back to the days of working in an office.

Voted UP, and shared.

This looks like a fun office activity, but women do tend to enjoy participating in things like this more than men do. I think activities like this bring people closer and help promote a positive atmosphere in an office. Good idea!

mary615 - Thanks so much! I am happy you liked the hub and thanks for the birthday wishes.

Stephanie - Thank you! Yes, women just tend to enjoy gift giving more for some holidays. The guys only seem to like participating in activities that involve beer. Hehe.
