8 th April 2012-EASTER Sunrise Service

Easter is the most important festival of the Christian calender. Falling on the Sunday after Good Friday, it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We worship at St. Marks Cathedral in the heart of Bangalore city. The church is located on No. 1, MG Road. There are regularly 3 services every Sunday morning-7 AM,8.30 AM,& 10.30 AM. An evening service is held at 6.15 too. For Easter, we have a sunrise service at 5.30 AM, and an 8.30 AM service. The sunrise service is the only one of its kind during the entire year when we worship outside the church. The 8.30 AM service is as usual inside the church. My family loves the Sunrise service celebrating EASTER every year. The service is scheduled at 5.30 AM, and unless you reach church before 5 AM, you will find yourself looking for seats at the very rear. Parking inside the large church compound will invariably be full as well,so it is best to leave home early. The pictures alongside show, our church and the congregation seated alongside it at dawn. The church is bathed in the warm glow of decorative focus lights as well as the first rays of sunlight. The congregation faces the east, thereby the gradual breaking of dawn is witnessed along with the sermon being heard. The early morning sun's rays are a welcome sight along with the sound of chirping birds, with the organic music in the backdrop while awaiting our turn at the communion table. The surrounding trees are full of fragrant and colorful flowers. This adds to the enchantment of the sunrise service.

A makeshift altar with a large cross in the center is set up outside the church in line with the church's regular altar. This is decorated with strands of white jasmine flowers. A communion table for the congregation to kneel down on, is laid across, and then row after row of chairs are laid out with the aisle in the center. The organ is placed by the side of the communion table with the organist seated there.

A few years earlier, this service used to be held outside the main entrance in the small patch of green, with the fountain in the center, but as the congregation grew in size, the service was shifted alongside the church.

Highlights of the EASTER Sunrise Service at St. Marks Church

Women are always the obvious choice to read the Gospel lesson, because it was women who reached Jesus' tomb first on the first Easter morning.

A fellowship breakfast is served soon after the service for all. This year, the famous South Indian iddiappam(string hoppers) was served with aromatic chicken curry followed by coffee.

There are many churches across the world that have a sunrise service every Easter.

Happy Easter to all ! May you experience the power of the Risen Lord today!
