First Birthday Gift Ideas

Happy Birthday - You're One!

Baby's first birthday is an event that everyone will remember –maybe even the child! Part of the fun is choosing the right gift to give to the birthday boy or girl. At this age, children are fascinated by toys, by colors, by sounds and lights.

Everything they play with helps develop skills and intellect. We all want to be the ones who give the guest of honor the gift that he won’t let go of and which becomes his new favorite.

But what to get? Here are some top ideas to get you started!

Who do you invite to your child's first birthday party?

LeapFrog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set

LeapFrog is a leading name in children’s toys, and this delightful farm animal set does not disappoint. Designed for children over 12 months, the set features a barn magnet with 5 sets of smaller animal magnets. Your child can create up to 25 different animal combinations (a cow head and a sheep’s bottom, for instance).

With AAA batteries, the set plays 5 bouncy banjo tunes, which are, thankfully for parents, volume adjustable. The Farm Magnetic Set can be played with on the fridge or on the floor. This keeps your child entertained and can help develop his motor skills. There is also a truck themed magnetic set.

Bee Bop Band

Parents.com chose this musical instrument set as one of its top toys for one year olds. If there is one thing that ties most children together, it is the love of music and making music. When left to their own devices, they will turn virtually anything into an instrument.

If you want to reclaim your pots, pans, and wooden spoons, try the Bee Bop Band Set featuring a cute bug theme with ant bells, a caterpillar tambourine, bee maracas, and a clear drum with centipede drumsticks.

The drum doubles as a storage unit for the other instruments, making it easy to store and transport. Parents, it does not come with earplugs, but your child will love it.

Bath Appliques or Bath Stickers

When you’re one, baths aren’t really about getting clean. They’re about splashing and playing in the fun, indoor pool. Encourage your child’s love of water (and of bath time) with fun appliques. These bath “stickers” stick to the wall when wet, providing plenty of fun for your child.

Create a fun baby bath gift basket complete with letters, numbers, farm animals, cars, pirates, space, or one of many more themes to suit your child’s interest. They rinse easily and store compactly. Alex Toys is a top name to try.

Fisher Price Chatter Telephone

An oldie but a goodie, the Chatter Phone lets children call mom, dad, or grandma any time they like. Children have a natural affinity for the phone, but we don’t want them to play with our smartphones.

This chatty kids version is still a favorite though phones have changed so much since this design was in use! They will still love the rotary dial, fun wheels, and friendly face.

Edushape Sensory Balls

Let’s play ball! Farm animals, phones, music, and bath time. You’ve got the bases pretty well covered, but don’t forget balls. A favorite of children of all ages, your child will create endless fun, especially with Edushape’s 4 Inch or 7 Inch See-Me Sensory Balls. These engage your baby’s senses and help develop motor skills with their great, nubby texture. The colors, the imagination, the possibilities; perfect for a one year old!

A Tip to Remember

There are so many great birthday gift options for one year olds, and many are inexpensively priced. A thoughtful idea, though, is to ask mom or dad what baby needs. That might be the most appreciated gift of all.
